Expository Plan- Copy in your Writing Section Choose one subject. List three reasons. These are your three body paragraphs. Why? Bake the Cake in each body paragraph. a. Each reason gets a paragraph; b. Examples follow each reason; How? c. Summation follows examples; What difference does this make? 4. Use the subject and reasons to write your introduction and conclusion.

Read the prompt carefully. Remember a time when you felt good about yourself or someone else. Write an essay explaining what you or the other person did that made you feel this way. Be sure to give specific examples and/or reasons why you felt good. NOW Select ONE topic. Write it down. Example: When my son graduated from basic training.

Determine three reasons by asking Why? (Did you feel good about your son graduating from basic training?) He had worked very hard. He graduated 2nd out of 538 in physical fitness. I wasn’t sure he would make it. Write down YOUR three reasons. These will become your three body paragraphs. Now lets learn how to BAKE THE CAKE: that is to organize your body paragraphs.

Bake the Cake Copy in your Writing Section Top layer: Statement and/or reason This layer is thin since it can usually be accomplished in one or two sentences. Key question: Why? Example: One of the most important reasons I was so proud when Matthew graduated basic training was because he had worked very hard to accomplish this goal. Write the first sentence in your first paragraph.

Bake the Cake Copy in your Writing Section Middle Layer: Examples/Descriptions This layer is the THICKEST of the three because it will contain particular details supporting the reason. Key question: How? As related to the answer to why? Example: How did Matthew work very hard?

Before going to basic he began focusing his energy on doing what was right. Recognizing that life was about choices, he stopped making excuses for his poor choices and began distancing himself from friends that he knew were not going to help him succeed in life. He started being a leader with his friends and not a follower. NOW write your middle layer.

Bake the Cake – Bottom Layer One of the most important reasons I was so proud when Matthew graduated basic training was because he had worked very hard to accomplish this goal. Before going to basic he began focusing his energy on doing what was right. Recognizing that life was about choices, he stopped making excuses for his poor choices and began distancing himself from friends that he knew were not going to help him succeed in life. He started being a leader with his friends and not a follower. As a result, Matthew was as focused as a laser and set his mind to not only finish basic but to do it with honor. Now write your Bottom Layer

Write a Plan for your essay. Introduction He worked very hard (HOW?) started doing what was right stopped making excuses for his poor choices distanced himself from friends that were bad influence focused as a laser (what difference this makes) C. Conclusion

Introductions – Copy in your Writing Section Should include the subject and the reasons or steps. However, it should create some INTEREST for the reader. Include your feelings or perspective on the subject. REMEMBER: “The more they snore, the lower you score.”

Introduction #1 On July 10, 2008 my youngest son Matthew graduated from the Air Force basic training course in Lackland, Texas. I was a very proud parent that day and I felt very good about him for three reasons. The first reason is he had worked very hard to get there. The second reason I was proud was because at some point I was worried he would not make it. The final reason was because he managed to finish 2nd out of 538 trainees in physical fitness.

Introduction #2 It is every parents desire that their children become successful, happy citizens and that they fulfill the desires and dreams they have for themselves. Often in the journey towards adulthood however; children stumble and struggle to discover who they are and what they are meant to accomplish. Like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon, the day my son graduated from basic training I knew that his hard work, his commitment to excelling in physical fitness, and the many hours I spent worrying over him were now past. The pride I felt watching him graduate was enough to make me burst.

Conclusions – Copy in your Writing Section Should return to the subject Reinforce the reasons or steps, but don’t simply repeat. Confirm or reemphasize your feelings, interest in, or connection to, the subject in an effort to close the essay forcefully. Don’t write a conclusion the resembles air escaping from a balloon.

Conclusion #1 As I look back and remember the pride I felt as Matthew raised his hand to swear his allegiance to the United States Air Force, I am overwhelmed with joy. It is a great feeling knowing that his persistence, changed attitude, and determined outlook have eliminated my fears that he would not find his place and become a successful young man. He is definitely on his way, and watching him fly is a feeling every mother wants to have.

Conclusion #2 I am very proud of my son’s graduation from basic training. He worked hard, was 2nd in his class of 538, and now I’m not worried. All of these together are the reasons why I am so happy. Thank you for reading my essay. I hope you enjoyed it.
