Reported speech. We use reported speech to quote another person’s words. Sentences in reported speech are usually spoken by another speaker and at a different time, so we change the verb tenses and pronouns. Direct speech “I want to go to bed early ,” she said. Indirect speech. She said (that) she wanted to go to bed early. When the reporting verb is in the past, the verb tenses change as follows: Present Simple – Past Simple. Present Continuous – Past Continuous. Present Perfect – Past Perfect. Past Simple – Past Perfect Future – Conditional Note Past Continuous doesn’t usually change. Also Past Perfect doesn’t change and some modal verbs. And well known facts(general truth) don’t change.

Reported speech. To report statement we use a reporting verb(say,tell,advise,explain,promise, etc)followed by a that-clause. In spoken English that may be omitted. Pronouns and possessive adjectives change according to the meaning. He said, “I can’t fix it myself” – He said he couldn’t fix it himself. Modal verbs change the following way : Can-could, will- would, may- might, must- had to
