T: Now we can read the text about Kateryna Bilokur, her life and her works. Look through the text, find and read the sentences

  •      about her childhood;
  •      about the year and the city where the paintings of Bilokur were firstly exhibited;
  •      in which there are the words of Pablo Picasso.

   Kateryna Bilokur was born on the 7th of December 1900 in the village of Bohdanivka not far from Poltava. Famous folk artist loved to paint nature, especially flowers. Since 1940, her works became known in Ukraine.

   As a child she was not involved in drawing. The first attempts to draw were made with charcoal on a piece of household linen. Because of poverty she was not able to enter any educational institution. In the daytime she worked in the field and in the garden, and in the evening, having managed the household, drew until night. Sometimes she managed to get oil paints. She painted mainly flowers, sometimes portraits.

    At the age of 20 Kateryna Bilokur twice tried to enter Art College in ceramics in Myrhorod and the Kyiv Theatre College, but she had no documents of finishing school. From the early period of creativity she painted portraits of Olha's Sister (1928) and a collective farmer Tetyana Bahmach (1932). Later she drew mainly flowers, learnt to compose, combine the colors into a single harmonious integrity.

    In the second half of the 1930s Kateryna Bilokur mastered techniques of painting. Along with the painting she led drama groups in the village club and performed plays on the stage. The first significant works of this period - "Birch" (1934), "Flowers behind the fence" (1935), "Flowers", "Portrait of my nieces."

    With the support of prominent Ukrainian singer Oksana Petrusenko the workers of Poltava house of folk art became interested in her works. In 1940 the paintings of Bilokur were firstly exhibited in Poltava, and then at the Republican exhibition in Kyiv.

    In 1949, she was admitted to the Union of Artists of Ukraine, and in 1951 - was awarded the Order of Honour and was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Ukraine. The 1950s were for Bilokur the most fruitful period of creativity. The Union of Artists of Ukraine helped her, she participated in many exhibitions, Bohdanivka was visited by representatives of Ukrainian culture.

    In 1954 her paintings "Tsar Kolos", "Birch" and "Kolkhoz Field" were displayed at the international exhibition in Paris. The paintings were appreciated by Pablo Picasso. When world-known maestro saw a picture of Bilokur, people said he had long stood by them, as if hypnotized, and then called her a genius, and added: "If we had an artist of this level, we would make the whole world talk about her."

   In 1956, Kateryna Bilokur was awarded as the folk artist of Ukraine. She created  wonderful paintings "Peonies", "Bundle of Flowers", "Flowers and Vegetables" (1959), "Still Life" (1960). In the last years of her life she was seriously ill. The artist died on June 9, 1961. And in 1977 Kateryna Bilokur memorial museum was opened in the village of Bohdanivka.

   Creativity of the artist from the village of Bohdanivka refers to the best achievements of the Ukrainian culture of the twentieth century. In the State Museum of Ukrainian Decorative Folk Art in Kyiv there is a big "bilokurivsky" Hall, in which the best of her creations are exhibited. Composer Lesya Dychko in 1983 created the ballet "Kateryna Bilokur", the drama of the same name (1980), a documentary film "Magical World of Bilokur "(1986) and a two-part feature film "Lotta" (1989) were also created.

Wikipedia says: “On 7 December 2020, Google celebrated her 120th birthday with a Google Doodle. In November 2024, a crater on the planet Mercury was named in her honor.”
