Проект включає: презентацію країнознавчого матеріалу з теми “Лондон” та містить комплекс власних вправ, розрахованих на самостійну роботу з використанням комп’ютера. Підготували: Учні 5-го класу

London is the capital of England, the capital of Great Britain and the capital of the United Kingdom. It is the largest town in Europe and one of the oldest towns in the world. More than six million people live there. London lies on both banks of the river Thames. The most important parts of London are: the City, the West End, the East End and the Westminster. The City is the oldest and the busiest part of London. Only about ten thousand people live there.In the City the traffic is heavy on week-days. That is because the most important London firms and banks have their offices there. But at weekends the City is almost dead. The West End is the richest part of London. All the most interesting buildings, best shops, theatres, cinemas, museums, parks and squares are situated there.

The East End is the part of London where working people live. It’s not so rich as other parts of London and there are fewer parks there. The Westminster is the area of central London,full of historical places. Almost every building, every street, palace, house and stone has its own past. London is really worth sightseeing. It has many bridges over the Thames, but the most interesting of them is the Tower Bridge near the Tower of London. And of course, when a tourist comes to London, he wants to see Big Ben, Nelson’s Column, to admire Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul’s Cathedral, to feel the specific atmosphere of Piccadilly Circus and 10 Downing Street. London is not only the capital of country, it’s also a big port, one of the greatest industrial centres in Europe. It is a university city and the seat of Government of Great Britain.

St. Paul’s Cathedral is the parish church of the British Commonwealth and one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. Its construction was completed at the beginning of the 18th century. The Cathedral is the masterpiece of the famous British architect Sir Christopher Wren. This Cathedral has another unique attraction – the Whispering Gallery. If someone who is standing near the wall on one side whispers some words, they can be heard near the wall on the opposite side, 32 meters away! Number 10,as it is often known, is the most famous address in London and one of the most widely recognized houses in the world. It is the Prime Minister’s home and place of work. Here there are conference room and dining rooms where Prime Minister meets his colleges. It is situated near the Palace of Westminster and Buckingham Palace. In the 1985, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said Number 10 had become one of the most precious jewels in the national heritage.

Westminster Abbey is another leading landmark of London. Its ancient walls house the church where almost all British monarchs have been crowned, married and buried since the 11th century. There you can also find the Poet’s Corner which is the resting place of some outstanding men of letters. There is also the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior which commemorates all the soldiers and officers killed in the First World War. Buckingham Palace is the official residence of sovereign. Though the building itself is not an architectural masterpiece, its interior decoration, paintings and furniture are really worth seeing. The weekly ceremony of the Changing of the Guard attracts with its music and soldiers’ traditional uniforms.

Piccadilly Circus is the heart of the West End. It is one of the busiest places in London, and if you want to see its focal point –come to the Statue of Eros closer. From Piccadilly Circus you can stroll along the richest streets of London – Regent, Oxford and Bond Streets – lined with expensive shops, restaurants and hotels. One of the oldest, best-known and most impressive places of interest in the City is the Tower of London which stands on the north bank of the Thames. In the course of history it has been a fortress, a royal palace, a state prison, a citadel and an arsenal. Now it is a unique museum in which you can feel the past centuries, try on the knight’s armory, the king’s crown, and take a picture with the Yeomen Warders who still guard the Tower.

The Clock Tower is famous all over the world as a symbol of London and Britain as it contains a huge clock and a bell, known as Big Ben. The bell tolls every hour and its sound is familiar to millions of people. Trafalgar Square was designed in the middle of the 19th century to commemorate the victory of the British fleet headed by Admiral Nelson over Napoleon’s fleet at Trafalgar in 1805. Nelson’s Column is very tall with a statue of the Admiral on the top and four bronze lions, that symbolize the power of British Empire, around it.
