Musee Du Louvre. Location: Paris, France

Once a palace that was home to Kings of France, the Louvre is now the world’s most famous museum, it is also the most largest museum in the world and is a historic monument in France. Displaying almost 38,000 pieces of art dating from prehistory to the 21st century and covering an area of approximately 783,000 square feet it is the world’s most visited art museum welcoming approximately 8.1 million visitors per year through its doors. The Louvre displays some of the most famous and finest pieces of art in the world including the Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa.

Vatican Museums. Location: Vatican City, Rome, Italy

The Vatican Museums are located within the city boundaries of the Vatican City and span almost 9 miles. The museum is home to the Roman Catholic Church’s Vatican Collection which is one of the largest and most stunning collections in the world. The Vatican Museums display collections amassed by the popes throughout the years and have some of the most famous roman sculptures and renaissance art masterpieces in the world. One of the most beautiful and famous pieces of art displayed here is the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512. Art by Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael are also displayed here.

Metropolitan Museum Of Art. Location: New York City

With enough variety for any art enthusiast and set on New York City’s Museum Mile, The Metropolitan Museum Of Art is one of the worlds largest museums. The museum is home to over 2 million pieces of art work including Greek sculptures, an extensive armoury and many European paintings including Medieval Europe and Ancient Egypt. The Museum in itself is beautiful and is a magnificent Beaux Art Facade building. Founded in 1870 for the purpose of being a museum and bringing art and education to the American people.

Although a fairly new museum, opening in 1997 the Getty Centre is well known for its architecture, gardens and views overlooking LA. The Getty Centre sits on top of a hill and access is through a cable pulled hovertrain from the parking garage at the foot of the hill. The building itself is a work of art designed by architect Richard Meier and the campus also house a research institute and a conservation institute. The Getty Museum has a remarkable collection of artwork which includes the works of Vincent Van Gogh including the famous painting Irises, Monet and Cezanne.

Musee d’Orsay. Location: Paris, France

Located on the left bank of the Seine, the Musee d’Orsay is housed in a former railway station built between 1898 and 1900 and is known for having a very dramatic and beautiful glass roof. The museum is know for specialising in 19th and 20th century artwork and has the largest collection in the world of impressionist and post impressionist masterpieces. The Musee d’Orsay is one of the largest art museums in Europe and is home to the famous Starry Night by Van Gogh along with other works of art from the likes of Monet, Manet, Degas, Cezanne, Renoir, Seurat, Sisley and Gauguin.

Uffizi Gallery. Location: Florence, Italy

Located in the centre of the historic city of Florence the Uffizi Gallery is one of the oldest museums in the world. The museum opened its doors to the public in 1865 and the gallery holds a collection of priceless works of art from the period of the Italian Renaissance. Famous for its Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci collections the Uffizi Gallery has become one of the most popular tourist attractions of Florence.

The Art Institute Of Chicago. Location: Chicago, Illinois

The Art Institute Of Chicago is located in Grant Park and is one of the oldest and largest art museums in the United States. It is recognised for its giant lion statues that sit outside the museum entrance. The Art Institute Of Chicago boasts extensive impressionist and post impressionist collections which include more than 30 Monet pieces including Haystacks. The famous painting Moulin Rouge by Henri Toulouse-Lautrec is also on display here. As well as being an art museum, The Art Institute Of Chicago also is a successful research institute it has a conservation and conservation science department, five conservation laboratories and one of the largest art history and architecture libraries in the country.

Tate Modern. Location: London, England

The Tate Modern is located in a former Bankside Power Station with views of the river Thames and the millennium bridge. The Tate Modern holds the national collection of British art from 1900 until present along with other international modern and contemporary art. It is one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary art in the world. The Tate Modern is home to many collections and temporary exhibitions including the largest collection of surrealism in the world, Forgotten Horizon, one of Dali’s many masterpieces, is displayed as part of this collection.

Prado Museum. Location: Madrid, Spain

Located in central Madrid The Prado Museum is the main Spanish national art museum and has one of the worlds finest collections of European art dating from the 12th century to the early 20th century. The Prado Museum collection currently comprises of around 8200 drawings, 7600 paintings 4800 prints and 1000 sculptures. Located on the National Mall in Washington D.C, the National Gallery Of Art is comprised of two buildings, an east and a west and features a sculpture garden surrounding a large fountain. In the east building there is an extensive collection of modern art from Jackson Pollock, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol.
