Objectives:  to develop students' listening, reading, and speaking ;  to revise and enrich students' vocabulary on the topic;  to practice group work;  to motivate students to communicate with each other.

-Good morning my dear friends. I’m glad to come into your friendly group, and look into your clever eyes. I know  : you are genius and talented.

Today I want to start our classes with some proverbs. You have  cods and your task is to make up proverbs according to  them.

-So, what can help us to be fit and take care about health? ( Sport)

 Thousands years ago ancient Greek said:  “ A sound mind in a sound body”. Millions of people who go in for sports knew from their own experience that  this famous saying is true. At the same time a great number  of people don’t go in for sport. Some of them realize that  sport is useful but prefer watching sports on TV.

 As you understand , the theme of our classes today is sport . But we  are  going to speak not only about sport in our life but also about British sport and about brief history of the greatest sports events in the world – Olympic Games. At the end of the lesson you’ll get a test about sport.

Well. I Consider myself an armchair sportsman. I enjoy sports most  when  I’m at home watching the Grandstand  on TV. It’s cricket that I like in particular. I could watch it for hours on end. I even stopped fixing my motorbike last week to watch England playing   Jamaica. And I love my  motorbike ! You see, it’s not that I’m not interested in sports. I’m just too lazy to drag myself to the football ground to kick the ball round. Oh, I love it. I’m very active in sports. I’ve always been like that. I  remember spending my days running through the woods and climbing up trees  when I was a little boy. Now I go jogging every week, and besides that, I play tennis every now and then. My favorite sport , however, is football. My life  would be boring without it. I think, I love  it, because it’s  a team game and you need all skills. You must be fit, you must keep on eye on what your team – mates do, and you need a quick brain. I am a member of our local football team. You see , that’s the other thing I like about sports : you make new friends, it gives you a felling of been part of something. We even do a lot of things together besides football.

Well, sport is fun, isn’t it? I couldn’t imagine a life without sport, could I? Only Maths, English and History – how dull would that be! I love  riding, playing volleyball and selling. It’s wonderful to be in the open and to enjoy the fresh air and the sun. But it’s tennis that I really interested in. My sport teacher  told me that  I had a skill  for playing tennis and that I should practice it more. That’s way I stopped sailing and riding, and tennis takes up all my free time now. It would be great  if I  made  it  big as a tennis professional. Just think of the money you could earn. It would be fantastic to  travel round the world, to meet people in business and to be interviewed by TV reporters .

Thanks goodness people never try  and talk sport to me! I hate sports. What is an endless boring tennis match to a good film – nothing, it just a waste of time! I think English people’s attitude to sport is so childish. Hundreds of thousands of them listen to cricket commentaries on their radio for five days. It so stupid.. They think that the big stars in the business  lead a wonderful life. What a  load  of rubbish! In my opinion, these people are poor devils living out of a suitcase. How can hey are any social life when they are always away from home? I don’t believe that these professionals are really interested in their sports. Besides, nobody ever mentions the dangers of sport. Just think  of the injuries…

People go in for sport because it is fashion. It helps you to be healthy, keep fit. Going  in for sports makes  people more organized  and better disciplined Sportsmen are famous all over the world. Sport takes extra energy	Sport is dangerous because brings injures. It takes a lot of time. You have no friends only regards. Famous  sportsmen are in public all the time and theirs funs fallow everywhere.

-As you see there are much more advantages of sport than its disadvantages. And what is your altitude to sport?

-The British are known to be great sports-lovers, so when they are neither playing, nor watching games, they like to talk about them. Many of the games we play now have come from Britain.

 

1^st group

       One of the most British games is cricket. It is often played in schools, colleges, universities and by club teams all over the country. Summer isn't summer without cricket. To many Englishmen cricket is both a game and a standard of behavior. When they consider anything unfair, they sometimes say: "That isn't cricket."

      But as almost everywhere else in the world, the game which attracts the greatest attention is Association football, or soccer. Every Saturday from late August till the beginning of May, large crowds of people support their favorite sides in football grounds. True fans will travel from one end of the country to the other to see their team play. There are plenty of professional and amateur soccer clubs all over Britain. International football matches and the Cup Finals take place at Wembley.

      Rugby football is also very popular, but it is played mainly by amateurs.

Next to football, the chief spectator sport in British life is horse-racing. A lot of people are interested in the races and risk money on the horse which they think will win. The Derby is perhaps the most famous single sporting event in the whole world.

       Britain is also famous for motor-car racing, dog-racing, boat-racing, and even races for donkeys. The famous boat-race between the teams of Oxford and Cambridge attracts large crowds of people.

       A great number of people play and watch tennis. Tennis tournaments at Wimbledon are known all over the world. The innumerable tennis courts of Britain are occupied by people between the ages of 16 and 60 who show every degree of skill — from practically helpless to the extremely able.

The British also like to play golf, baseball, hockey, grass-hockey. Various forms of athletics, such as running, jumping, swimming, boxing are also popular.                   You can sometimes hear that there are no winter sports in England. Of course the English weather is not always cold enough to ski, skate, or toboggan, but winter is a good season for hunting and fishing. Indeed, sport in one form or another is an essential part of daily life in Britain.
