Theme: Ukraine and the world

Type of the lesson: revision and introducing the skills into practice

Objectives:

  • Practical: to revise vocabulary, to get more information about Ukraine and the UK,
  • Educative : to broaden foreign languages competence, using knowledge about the United Kingdom and Ukraine.
  • Developing: to promote intellectual curiosity, to develop listening habits, using  Passive Voice and modal verbs, to develop students` intelligence, intellectual flexibility, to do  general decisions, to develop  communicative  habits, to teach students to analyze and compare information about English-speaking countries and our country, to teach work in groups, to form positive attitude to the process of learning, to teach speech etiquette.

 

Equipment:

  • A textbook Get 200;  a textbook Solutions
  • tapes 2.32, 2; 1.02

 

 

PROCEDURE

 

  1. Greeting. T: Good morning, guys. Glad to see you. Today we are going to speak about wonders of Ukraine and the UK.
  2. Introducing the topic. T: The theme is given on the blackboard. Can you decipher it using the key on the left? Ss : Yes, it’s “Ukraine and the world”.
  3. Brainstorming: T: What do we need to discuss the topic? Ss: We need to revise words. T: Right. What words beginning with these letters can you think of? Ss:

L: lake

A: ancient

N: new

D: destination

M: mountain

A: allow

R: river

K:know

S:sea

  1. Presenting vocabulary, grammar.

   T: Now match the words that are similar in meaning:

  1. Speaking: T: What historical and cultural sites of Ukraine can you name? Look at the text in exercise 4 and how quickly can you find the information? (ex 4 p 132).

T: How many of these places have you been to? Which one impressed you more? (discussion)

  1. Reading: T: Now we’re going to read some interesting facts about English landmark Stonehenge. You need to fill in the gaps in the text. Then we are going to discuss the text in pairs.

Ss read text “Stonehenge”

Stonehenge is a circle of large standing stones on Salisbury Plain in Willshire , England. It was built in pre-historic times. Work on the stone circle began in about 3100 BC. About a century  later, the large circle of stones around a smaller semi-circle was added. These stones are 9 m long and weigh 50 tons. It is not known exactly why Stonehenge was built, but it is thought that the builders were sun worshippers .What is surprising about Stonehenge is the fact that some of the stones were brought from as far as 385 km away. Today, thousands of tourists travel to see Stonehenge.       

Underline the correct word.

Stonehenge is a large stone square/circle. 2. It is thought that the builders of Stonehenge were  farmers/sun worshippers. 3. Stonehenge was built in 3100/ 2100 BC. 4. The stones weigh 5 tons/ 50 tons. 5. The stones are 9 m long / 19 metres long.  

  1. Work on grammar:

T: What grammar structure is used in the sentence “Stonehenge was built in 3100/ 2100 BC?” Ss; Passive voice. T: How is the Passive formed? Ss: It is formed with the verb ‘to be’ and the past participle of the main verb.

T: Complete the sentences with the correct passive form of the verbs in brackets (ex 1 p 155).

Now rewrite the sentences using the passive:

They have arrested two boys for vandalizing the school property.

Someone was interviewing the politician when she suddenly became ill.

Oscar Wild wrote this poem when he was in prison.

They must produce these chocolates in Switzerland – they are so good!

Someone will have marked the tests by the end of the week.

They don’t allow anyone to eat sandwiches in the classroom.

  1. Quiz. T: 1. Complete the information by circling or writing your answers, then compare them with a partner (1 p 130).
  2. Listening.

T: Let’s remember the landmarks of Ukraine. What are they? What the most popular landmarks of the world can you recollect?. What do know about the people from these countries? So listen attentively and match the people to the names of their countries. (Solutions track 1.02).

  1. Group projects. T: Now let’s work in groups. Describe a place of interest that you know. Mention some of the things below:
  • the place
  • the local people
  • the tourists
  • the scenery
  • other
  1. Summarizing. Feedback, giving home assignment.

T: We’ve worked on the topic “Ukraine and the world”. Comment on our lesson. Your hometask will be to make a mini-project about a famous natural wonder of Ukraine (p 134).
