My native city – Zaporizhzhia
There are lots of beautiful and important cities in Ukraine. To my mind the best city for every person is his native city where a person was born. My native city is Zaporizhzhia which is located in the southern Ukraine. The main river of the country, Dnipro, flows through our city. The city occupies both banks of the river at present. The city covers 334 km2. Besides there is a world famous island Khortytsia that is the only island in Ukraine. It is situated in the middle of the city and splits the river into two streams called the New and Old Dnipro. The New Dnipro is about 800m wide and the Old Dnipro is about 200m wide. There are some mountainous places on the island, however, they are not very high.
Zaporizhzhia is a rather green city. The island nature is unique and exclusive because of dry steppe air and a lot of fresh water around the island. Khortytsia is a national park. There are many large ravines on the island.
The city is also famous for the first hydro – electric station on the Dnipro river. A picturesque panorama of the city can be seen from its gigantic dam. It takes your breath away being there. As a matter of fact, the city itself began to develop in 1927 with the construction of the hydro – electric station. Though Zaporizhzhia was founded much more earlier in 1770 by the first military settlers on the left bank of the Dnipro river. The former district town has turned into one of the largest industrial and cultural centers of Ukraine so far. Today Zaporizhzhia is an important industrial center of Ukraine, the country`s main car manufacturing company, the Motor Sich world – famous aircraft engine manufacturer.
Currently the city is the sixth largest in Ukraine and has population of 770,411 people.
The cultural background of Zaporizhzhia is creating by a number of museums, theatres, cinemas and libraries. There are lots of small amateur groups, folk music and song bands, art galleries in the city. My native city regularly holds festivals and feasts, competitions of the Cossack arts and art exhibitions.
