GM foods

Every day scientists make new discoveries, explore new planets and improve a technology of our world. It is silly to avoid, that in past two decades it has become popular to produce GM foods. However, people have not got enough experience in using this invention, so in this case it creates a contrast between people who think that on a long distance it could be dangerous for their health, other perceive this groundbreaking invention friendly and believe that eating this kind of foods will not affect indirectly their bodies.

 To start with, GM foods are products that are exposed to altering by changing their genes background. Nobody will deny, that in most cases people embrace altered foods like something unexplored or something that should be investigated in proper way and could lead to vital consequences. But is GM foods really bear such a huge threat or is it only undervalued invention, whom fear like something incomprehensible?

   Obviously, there are several advantages. Around the world a huge amount of crops are destroyed because of plant diseases or insects. One way of tackling this problem is by spraying them with chemicals which protect them from harm. These chemicals, however, are generally very expensive and cause a lot of harm to the environment. The machines which spray these chemicals, for instance, use a huge amount of fuel, adding considerably to the carbon footprint of the farming industry. Also, some of these chemicals have been proven to kill bees and pollute local water system. However, using GM crops can deal with this problem much easier and safer for the environment. They have had their DNA changed so that they are more capable of resisting plant viruses and damage from insects themselves. In this way, modified crops mean that farmers no longer need to buy and spray chemicals.   Also, can be ignored a huge role of GM foods in helping to fight world hunger. At the moment, the world is facing a food catastrophe: due to growth of the population, soon it will be exigence to increase food production by 50% in order to feed the world population. It seems to be a huge problem, however not for retrofit foods. It was already said, that they are resistant to herbicides, but this is far from all their superior ability: GM crops can growth in infertile soil, so it will give an opportunity to use abandoned lands, modified foods contain much more vitamins than usual food, therefore many people who have vitamin deficient will get the chance for recovery. So, in some way GM foods can be even home medicine, and help population to improve health.

 On the other hand, this advantage may also become a negative side of invention. As well as medications, GM foods treat one aspect, but also have bad effect on other part of the body. For example, modified foods have changed DNA, but today's technology can not provide absolute correctness in carrying out gene replacement. That is why, this invention can also be called a “time bomb”, because the results of such “treatment” could be seen only after several generations.

 Another argument that keep people out of GM foods that this technology is controlled by very small companies. When a new, genetically modified plant is created, it automatically becomes the subject of property law. This means that they can control the prices of seeds very easily. If prices of seeds raised, for instance, farmers might have no choice but to buy them at that price since no other companies would exist to offer cheaper, more competitively-priced seeds. To my mind, governments need to do something about this before such problems arise. Suchwise, this minus might be crossed out from the list. 

 To conclude, I think GM food technology has the potential to play a huge role in fighting world hunger. But toward this happen people have to change their attitudes toward this invention. At the moment, people seem to be against altered food production without knowing much about it. Because it is unnatural it must be dangerous, they seem to think. However, the decision whether this food is dangerous or not depend only on personal attitude.
