Gorillas live only in west and central Africa. These are tropical areas and the weather is rainy and hot. They don’t live on other continents. Some gorillas live in the mountains and some live in places with a lot of trees. They are brown or black in colour. They are tall, but not very tall – they grow to 1.75 metres high, but they are heavy and they can weigh 200 kilos. They usually live for 35 to 40 years in their natural habitat, but in zoos they can live 10 or 15 years longer.

The gorilla’s day is organised: there is a time to rest and sleep, a time to eat and a time to travel. For food, gorillas eat grass, fruit and sometimes insects. They don’t drink water very often because plants and fruit have water. Gorillas are very intelligent and they are like us in lots of ways. They laugh and cry and they can be happy and sad. They don’t speak a language, but they can communicate with different noises or sounds.
