Text 1. Dante’s peak,1997 (director Roger Donaldson)

Saturday at 19.00 on Movie Time Channel

 On a lovely summer day, the small town of Dante’s peak in the Cascade Mountains is celebrating. It has just received an award for being the second best place to live in the USA. Nobody is thinking of the nearby volcano, which hasn’t been active for years.

 The scientist Dr. Harry Dalton (played by Pierce Brosnan) is sent to Dante’s Peak to study the volcano. He finds dead plants and animals. He thinks the mountain is not a safe place to  be for people, and he tries to get the local council to prepare an  avacuation. But  nobody  listens to him. They are afraid business people will not invest in the town, if they think it is a dangerous place. Even Dalton’s boss , Dr. Paul Dreyfuss is against him. The only person who believes him is the mayor of the town, Rachel Wando(Linda Hamilton),a single mother of two children.

Soon the mountain begins to cause serious problems and the people in the town realize the big danger of the volcano. But it’s  too late. The volcano erupts. Day becomes night: air turns to fire; buildings fall; people panic as they run for their lives through the ash and dust. Harry and Rachel discover that Rachel’s children have gone up the mountains to try and save their grandmother. They follow them. Fighting against the volcano, Harry, Rachel and children are the only people left in the destroyed town, and that’s not the end- the second eruption is still to come.

 If you’ve seen one disaster movie, you’ve seen them all. You can guess who will live and of cause who will fall in love. But the action is fast and the special effects are still fun to watch after ten years.

Okay, if you look carefully, you can see that cars in the falling bridge are models with no drivers inside. But you’d never know that volcanic ash is really little bits of newspaper. The ground shakes, red hot rocks come down from the sky, and there are lots of deep  low sound effects. A good way to spend a Saturday evening.
