An Interactive Journey: Science on Your Plate

A STEAM-based English project combining food, experiments, and science vocabulary

Goals of the Project:

-to develop students’ English vocabulary through food-based science experiments.

-to foster curiosity and creativity using hands-on, real-life activities.

-to integrate elements of STEAM with language learning in a fun and meaningful context.

T: Hello everyone! Today is the final day of our project “Science on Your Plate”.

There’s a popular belief that the best chefs are men...But girls, are you ready to prove otherwise? Today, we’ll split into two teams — boys vs. girls — and dive into fun cooking science experiments. Will the results confirm this old idea or turn it upside down? Let’s find out — and may the best chefs win! Remember — teamwork and creativity are the real ingredients for success!

1.Vocabulary part

Objective: To build a strong base of cooking- and science-related words that will help students talk about the experiments

T: Let’s work in groups and  review vocabulary which you’ll use during our presentation. The first word is               ingredient. Can you tell me the definition of this word? You are right –  any of the foods or substances that are combined to make a particular dish. The task is – one group tells  the ingredients of the dish, another one guesses this dish.

S’s answers:

T: next task is to write on the paper as many action verbs related to cooking as you can, the group with the greatest number is the winner.

S’s answers : Mix,  stir,  heat,  cool, add,  boil,  freeze, bake etc.

T: Great list of verbs! Now let’s play a game  Mime & guess: one student mimes the verb, others guess

T: I’m sure you know that a chemical reaction is when two substances mix and something new is created. Think about science words connected with food. Look at the words with missing letters, read its definition and write it.

S’s answers : fermentation, coagulation , oxidation,  caramelization, etc.

2.Quiz: “What Happens When We Cook?”

Objective: To activate prior knowledge and test understanding of food-related science concepts.

T:Let’s do the quiz

1.What happens when we heat sugar?

a) It freezes

b) It melts and caramelizes

c) It disappears

Correct answer: B

2.Which ingredient makes a cake rise?

a) Water

b) Flour

c) Baking powder

Correct answer: C

3.Which of these is a chemical reaction?

a) Mixing water and juice

b) Adding vinegar to baking soda

c) Cutting vegetables

Correct answer: B

4.True or False: Ice melting is a chemical change.

 False – it’s a physical change

5.Why does bread rise in the oven?

A) Because it melts

B) Because of yeast producing gas

C) Because it absorbs water

Correct answer: B

6.What causes the “sizzling” sound when food is fried?

A) Water turning into steam

B) Air escaping the pan

C) Food boiling

Correct answer: A

7.Why do onions make us cry when we cut them?

A) Because they are spicy

B) Because they release a gas that irritates our eyes

C) Because they are too cold

 Correct answer: B

8. What happens when you mix baking soda with vinegar?

A) It turns purple

B) It creates bubbles and gas

C) It becomes cold

 Correct answer: B

9. What does salt do to ice when making ice cream?

A) Makes it melt faster

B) Makes it colder

C) Makes it taste sweet

 Correct answer: B

3. Video Presentation

T:It’s high time to watch your videos with examples of science and food.

S’s answers: Students show videos of their experiments (recorded at home).

They narrate the steps and explain the science in English.

The list of experiments:

Magic Banana Ice Cream

Fruit Jelly – Gelatin & Cooling Reaction

Fizzy Lemonade – Acid-Base Reaction

Melting Race – Which Food Melts Fastest?

Caramelization of Sugar

Dancing Raisins – Gas Bubbles in Soda

Dough Rising & Fermentation

Popping Popcorn – Heat & Water Pressure

Shake Your Own Butter (From Cream to Butter)

Homemade Cheese – Milk & Acid Coagulation

Bouncing Egg

Microwave Mug Cake

Apple Oxidation & Antioxidants

Cupcake Volcano – Baking Soda & Vinegar Reaction

4. Reflection & Voting

T: Let’s vote for the best experiments that surprised you most

For our winners we have three chef's hats. Don’t forget about our task at the beginning ”boys vs. girls”, let’s count the points of each team and clarify is a popular belief true or false?

5. Extension Project: Digital Book

Students collect their experiments in an electronic book

Final product is shared as a class science cookbook done with the help of Bookcreator.
