PROCEDURE
I. Introduction
II. Warming-up
Before our starting to London let’s find out if London is worth visiting. I’d like to draw your attention to some words, said about London.
“When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life,
for there is in London all that life can afford”
Samuel Johnson
“I hope to see London before I die”
W. Shakespeare. Henry IV
III. Main Part
1. Practicing Pronunciation
T. To make it easier for Londoners to understand us let’s practise our pronunciation. Look at the screen, read and pronounce correctly the proper names for the topic of our lesson. Repeat after me all together:
BUCKINGHAM PALACE
WESTMINSTER ABBEY
THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT
TRAFALGAR SQUARE
BRITISH MUSEUM
ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL
PICCADILLY CIRCUS
THE TOWER OF LONDON
HYDE PARK
REGENT’S PARK
MADAM TUSSAUD’S MUSEUM
WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR
SIR CHRISTOPHER WREN
2. “Brain-ring”
T. To my mind we can’t go anywhere if we know nothing about the place. We’ll be invited to the UK if we know British geography, history, culture and traditions well. Do all your best to have a wonderful trip. I’ll try to refresh your knowledge about the United Kingdom in order to win an invitation to London.
Now, we’ll play the game “Brain-ring”. Please, answer the questions, count the points and write them down in your sheets of paper. As usual, if you give the correct answer you put “plus”, if you are wrong, put “minus”. At the end of our lesson we’ll count your points and find out what marks you’ll get for today’s lesson.
T. That’s all. Count your points, please. I think that we all get a prize – an invitation to the UK.
3. Listening
T. Be so kind to imagine that we are on the board of a modern airplane. While we are on our way to London, I’d like you to learn some facts from the history of London.
Pre-listening
Please, have a look at some new words, which can be difficult for you to understand.
In front of you can see sheets of paper with after-listening tasks. These tasks consist of two parts. As usual, I’ll read for you twice. After my first reading you’ll do the first part of your tasks. After my second reading you’ll do the second part of your tasks.
While – listening
To the small settlement in the year 55 B.C. Caesar came from Rome. “Llyndin” that means “a lonely place” became Londinium. The Romans made Londinium the large and rich city with good streets, beautiful palaces, shops and villas. But in the fifth century the Romans left Britain.
The Saxons and Danes conquered the land and ruined the city. Londinium lay in ruins for a long time. In the 9th century the Saxon king rebuilt the city.
For a long period of time London was a rich and crowed city, but in 1666 the Plague fell upon London. It came from one of the shops which came to the city every day. The houses of sick had a red cross painted on the door. In 1666 the Great Fire destroyed 3000 houses and 97 churches in London. But the Fire cleared away the old dirty wooden houses. A new London – of stone – was built.
After- listening activity
True or false
Answer the questions
T. Please, look at the screen and check up your answers. As you remember, the highest mark for this kind of work is “ten”. Two correct answers cost one point. Write down your points into your lists.
4. Speaking. Checking home task. (Role-play)
T. Now we are in London. We’ll make an excursion about this beautiful city. Let’s imagine that you are guides representing the tourist agency of London. Each of you was given a task to prepare a report about places of interest of London. You have done your best to find interesting and useful information, preparing for today’s lesson. At the end of our lesson our guests will choose the best guide in our group.
Pupils demonstrate their reports and ask questions about the places of interest which they are interested in.
IV. Summing-up
T. Our excursion came to the end. It’s high time to come back to Ukraine. I hope that you liked your excursion about London and you are full of impressions. But we have some more tasks to do while we are on our way home.
1. Look at the screen and answer the questions
Dear Mum,
I am having a great time here in England. At the moment I am in London, on the river Nile. It is the capital of England. More than six million people live here. I have been to St. Paul’s Cathedral. St. Paul’s Cathedral is the correct name for the Houses for the Houses of Parliament. Tomorrow I will go to the Tower of London which was built by Sir Christopher Wren.
It’ s high time for our guests to name the best guide in our group.
Home – assignment. Your task is to write a letter to your friend about your trip to London. Don’t forget about the strict order of writing an address.
