Topic: “After-school Clubs. Ukrainian Club.”

Aim: The students learn about after-school clubs, improve listening comprehension and learn about Ukrainian symbols.

Learning objectives:

     By the end of the lesson students will be able to:

• review the names of after-school clubs;
• use the information from the conversation for doing tasks;
• identify Ukrainian symbols.

Materials: Prepare 5 (Work Book), pictures of after-school clubs from Google; Wordwall, cards with tasks, personal self-assessment cards, the poem of V. Sosiura «Любіть Україну» and its translation into English by the Embassy of Ukraine to the UK (Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UChsidaLEZc ), physical activity (a video from YouTube), the presentation    

Procedure

1.Greeting. Topic. Learning objectives.

T: Good afternoon, dear students. Today we’re going to talk about after-school clubs and learn about Ukrainian symbols. By the end of the lesson you’ll be able to review the names of after-school clubs; use the information from the conversation for doing tasks; identify Ukrainian symbols.

2. Warming up.

T: How are you today? Take your personal self-assessment card, write your name and show your mood. Draw a happy or a sad face.

3. Listening.

    3.1. Pre-listening activities:

       a) Vocabulary practice

T: Look at the picture and name the club

     b) Doing the interactive exercise on the Wordwall

T: Let’s do this exercise on our board. Come to the board and match the name of the club to the picture.

     3.2. While-listening activities:

T: Open your WB on page 44 and do exercise 3. Listen to Miss Doyle talk to her class. Which club does everyone like?

T: Listen again and complete the timetable from the exercise 4.

        3.3. Post-listening activities:

a) Doing Yes/ No exercise.

T: Listen again. Write Yes or No in the exercise 5. Correct the wrong sentences.

1. Yoga starts before athletics club.                 (Yes)

2. Athletics club starts at 4.15.                         (Yes)

        3. The school doesn’t have a coding club.       (No)

        4. Horse-riding club is at half past four.         (Yes)

        5. There is one club on Friday.                        (No)

b) Answering questions in pairs.

T: Work in pairs. Ask and answer the questions.

-Which clubs are on Monday?

-What club is number 6?

-When is coding?

-Which clubs have students got on Tuesday?

4. Physical activity.

T: Stand up and move to the music.

5. Discussion.

T: In our school on Tuesday we’ve got a Ukrainian club. I invite you to join it. Answer my questions: Where are you from? What nationality are you?

T: Yes. We’re Ukrainians. Ukraine is our Motherland. Our country has some national and traditional symbols. Which of them do you know?

T: Look at the screen and say the names of some Ukrainian symbols after me: a Ukrainian flag, a Ukrainian Trident, bread (korovai), a pysanka (a coloured egg).

6. Group work.

T: Let’s work in four groups. Complete the sentences to make the text about one of the symbols. Use the words from the box.

T: Present your texts. Let’s check them together. Listen to the presentations carefully and be ready to do True/ False.

7. Doing True/ False.

T: Read the sentences, do True/ False and correct the false ones.

1. The Ukrainian flag is blue and yellow.        (True)

2. Ukrainians meet guests with a flag.             (False)

        3. Ukrainians paint pysankas for Christmas.   (False)

        4. Ukrainian Trident is a new symbol.             (False)

        5. The flag has got a lot of patterns.                 (False)

T: Let’s listen to the poem of V. Sosiura «Любіть Україну» and its translation into English by the Embassy of Ukraine to the UK.

T: Do you like the poem? Love Ukraine, our Motherland.

8. Self-assessment.

T: Take your personal self-assessment card. Let’s look at the criteria. Read them.

T: Evaluate your work for doing the tasks. Also, draw your emoji.

9. Homework.

T: Your homework is to do tasks on your cards. Additional task is to speak about one of the Ukrainian symbols.

10. Summarising. Reflection.

T: Which after-school clubs do you remember? Name Ukrainian symbols. What do you remember about them? Thank you for the lesson. Have a nice day! Good-bye!
