Topic: My best friend

Book: Full Blast Plus 5, Unit 2e

Form: 5

Aims:

-         to review linking words and, but

-           to practice reading, speaking and writing skills

-           to develop digital skills by using online tools and platforms such as Flippity, Wordwall, ClassroomScreen

Outcomes:

By the end of the lesson pupils will be able to read and tell about a friend; will know how to use AND and BUT; will be ready to write a short paragraph about a friend.

Materials:

Student’s book Full Blast Plus 5, interactive whiteboard (IWB), hand outs (a crossword, a table “My BF”)

Resources:

Canva, Word Wall, Flippity, ClassroomScreen

Time:

45 minutes

 

Procedure

While pupils enter the class and are getting ready – play some energetic video for them to get in the mood for the lesson, e.g. Hokey Pokey song.

 

Tell the topic and present the outcomes of the lesson.

 

Warm-up

-         To review appearance vocabulary pupils do the crossword puzzle. They scan the QR code and do it individually. Pupils that don’t have access to the Internet, do the crossword on the handouts. One or two pupils do it on the IWB. https://wordwall.net/uk/resource/64368028

-         Talk about pupils’ friends. Ask how many they have and how many best friends they’ve got.

Presentation

Ex. 4a p. 31

Reading, discussion

-         Read the topics together, make sure pupils understand everything. Ask students to read the text and find which of the topic the girl mentions. They have to underline the words which helped them decide. They do the task on the board (https://shorturl.at/qAQY1) – put the topics into two columns and arrange them in the correct order according to the text.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

-         After that ask pupils if they had to tell about their best friend, which information they’d include. Discuss with the whole class and add the topics if necessary. Don’t forget to arrange in the logical order.

Individual work

-         Students fill in the key-fact table about their best friend. One student does it on the board.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Production. Pair work

Ex. 4b p. 31

-         After filling the table students talk in pairs – ask and answer about each other’s best friend. First, do it with the student at the board – let other students ask him/her questions.

-         After talking in pairs ask some students to report about his/her best friend to the class.

-         Read and discuss the usage of the linking words. Students find them in the text (Ex. 4a p. 31) and explain.

-         Give students 2 minutes to complete the sentences of Ex. 4c p. 31 then check the answers.

Hometask

Ex. 4d p. 31

Tell students that at home they will have to write about their best friend. Read the notes and the Tip together with the students and make up a paragraph about an imaginary friend as a model (orally).

 

Self-assessment

-         Tell students to think about the lesson. Show and read ‘I can’ statements and they show their thumbs according to their feelings about these statements:

  • I can use AND and BUT in a sentence.
  • I can ask and answer questions about a friend.
  • I can read and tell about my friend.

 

 

 

 

 

 

-         Ask students if they feel they are ready to write the paragraph. Before going out of the class students come to the board and vote, showing their feelings (https://shorturl.at/dwxGM).
