                                       Sport .  Famous sportsmen.(6th form)

 

Aims:

  • To summarize the material of the topic and to involve pupils into communicative activities;
  • To revise the vocabulary related to the topic;
  • To practice the Present Simple and types of questions;
  • To develop logical thinking, speech reaction, creative skills,
  • To promote pair work skills.

 

Equipment: the recording of the words and  song, handouts, PPt presentations.

 

                                                     Procedure

 

1. Greeting

T: Good morning, dear children! Good morning, dear guests! Welcome to our lesson.

    Are you ready for the lesson, children? How are you? Today we have an unusual    

    lesson because we have many guests. Are you afraid of guests? Turn and greet them.

    Children let’s start our lesson.

2. Warming –up activity

T: What day is it today? What season is it now? Children, look through the window and describe today’s weather.

(Some pupils describe the weather)

T: What can children do outdoors when the weather is nice?

(They can play different games, play football, volleyball)

3. Main part of the lesson

T: Pupils, today at our lesson we’ll speak about sports and games. During the lesson we’ll revise our knowledge on the topic and at the end of the lesson you will be able to interview a famous sportsmen and to speak about him.

 

Vocabulary work

T: We have already learned a lot of information about sport and games. Let’s revise our knowledge about sport. Firstly, listen and repeat.

(PPt presentation 1- pupils listen to the words related to sport and repeat them)

T: Once again. What kinds of sports do you know?

(Pupils name all kinds of sports they know)

T: Now, let’s make sentences with some of these words.

(PPt presentation 2- pupils make sentences)

Speaking

T: Pupils, how do you think, why people go in for sport?

(to keep fit, to be active , to be full of energy, to be strong, to be healthy, to become a champion, to become a good sportsman)

T: And what about you? Do you go in for sport? Why?

    (pupils answer the questions )

Reading

T: Thank you children. Now let’s play a guessing- game. I give you cards with short texts. Your task is to read them and to guess what sports and games are described here.

Writing

T: Children. do you like to watch sport on TV? What sport do you like to watch ?

Who are people who go in for sport professionally ? Let’s see how well do you know our best sportsmen.

(the teacher show the pictures of famous Ukrainian sportsmen)

Who is it? What do you know about him(her) ?

Have you ever met a famous sportsman?

I have a surprise for you today. In some minutes our famous football player Andriy  Shevchenko will come to our lesson. You’ll have a chance to talk with him about his life. For that we’ll organize a press-conference. Do you know what is a  press-conference? (a meeting where journalists put questions to famous people ). So we must train in making questions. I give you cards with sentences. You have to write questions to these sentences.

T: Thank you pupils. And now let’s prepare questions for our guest. What would you like to know about him?

(a boy is entering the classroom, he is wearing a T-shirt with the name of Shevchenko )

T: Good morning, Mr. Shevchenko. We are glad to see you in our school and at our English lesson. We are very good pupils and we are interested in your life and career . We have some questions for you.

The boy: Good morning, pupils. I am glad to see you too. I know you are football fans. I am ready to tell you about my life.

  • When and where were you born?
  • I was born on 29th September 1976 in a small village of Dvirkivshchyna in the Ukrainian province of Kyiv.
  • What age did you start to play football?
  • I started to play football at the age of 9.
  • What football team did you start to play in?
  • I started to play in Dynamo Kyiv youth football team.
  • What other teams did you play in?
  • I was a member of Italian football team Milan. I played in this team 7 years. In 2006 I moved to English football club Chelsea. Now I play in Dynamo Kyiv again.
  • What other sports do you like to play?
  • I like to play chess. It helps to train my brain.
  • Do you prefer Ukrainian or foreign teams?
  • I like all teams. All teams play well.
  • How many goals did you score in your life?
  • Very nice question. I scored 370 goals.
  • How many matches did you play in your life?
  • I played 186 matches .
  • What do you like to do in your free time?
  • I like to watch films with A. Abdulov and J. Roberts.
  • Are you married? How many children do you have?
  • Yes, I’m married. I have two children.
  • Can you describe your best goals?
  • I can’t describe but I can show them.

T: Mr. Shevchenko What can you advise these pupils?

  • If you want to be healthy, strong, active you must go in for sport. If you want to become good sportsmen you must train every day and very hard.

4. Summarizing

T: Thank you very much .Now children, let’s see what do you know about Shevchenko. For example,  I know he is 36 years old. And you, what do you know about him? 

(pupils tell one by one the information about Shevchenko they have known)

T: Thank you all for taking an active part in our lesson. I like the way you work. Your marks are …

Handout 1

 

We can go in for this kind of sport everywhere the water is: in the

river , lake, swimming pool, at the sea. You need a special cap, bathing slips and glasses. Guess what kind of sports is it?

 

In Ukraine it is a very popular kind of sports. We need many objects for this kind of sports: a gym, wall bars, climbing rope, mat. What kind of sports is it?

 

It is the main part of events of the summer Olympic Games. Events consists of running, jumping, throwing, walking.

 

It is a team game. The players have a ball. They play the ball with their hands. There are 6 players in each team.

 

It is the most popular game in Ukraine. The players have a ball. The game lasts for 90 minutes. The players kick the ball and run after it. They try to score a goal.

 

It is a very beautiful kind of sports. The sportsmen do some exercises or dance to the music. They have skates and beautiful costumes on.

 

It is a game for two or sometimes four players. You need a special

table , a bat for each player and a small white ball made of plastic.

It is the most popular sport in the world. It is a team game.

 

It is a winter game. The players don’t run on the field, they skate. They have clubs in their hands.

 

You play this game in the swimming pool. You need a ball and two goals and you must be a good swimmer.

This  game is played in schools, universities, sports clubs. It was first played in the USA. The team has 5 players. They try to throw the ball into the basket.
