I think the Internet is the greatest _______ ever. Think how it has changed the world. So much _________ is out there. It has totally changed my life. I can chat with friends, download music, buy books and get all the info I need for my homework. It took days or weeks to do any of these things before the Internet. I spend hours every day _____. I think I spend a little too long. I’m sure staring at a computer screen all day isn’t good for my eyes. I think it’s also making me fat. I need to _______ a little more. The only thing I don’t like about the Internet is that it can be ________. I don’t really like putting my ________ information online, especially on social networking sites like Facebook.

Say what advantages and disadvantages of using the Internet are mentioned here. (Students’ answers)
a) Pre-reading activity
Say what rules of safety online you already know. (Students’ answers)
Do the matching task and you’ll get safety rules:
Keep personal information to report posts.
Check tell someone you trust.
Keep to people online
Be nice what you share.
Never meet anyone in person your privacy settings.
Know how your password safe.
If you see anything online that you don’t like private.
Take care with that you’ve met only in the Internet.
b) While-reading activity
Read the text and match its parts with the headings below (the headings are the rules of safety).
You shoud treat people online in the same way as you treat people offline. Remember! Online comments can often be misunderstood. Be careful what you say to people and how you say it. Respect the people you interact with and they should respect you too.
Don’t post anything online that you wouldn’t want your mum, your dad or your grandma to see. The moment you upload a video or a photo it can be shared again and again. And it can finally appear anywhere and be seen by anyone.
Never post personal information online. This includes the name of your school, home address, your phone number, your massenger or Skype id.
4. _____________________
Do this on all the sites you use and make sure that only your friends can see your posts. Do you really want the whole world to see what you post online? Some things are best shared with just your friends. So keep your online profile as private as you can. And choose your online friends carefully.
You need to know how to report posts, how to block people on all the sites you use. If you don’t know how to do this, find out. Remember that there are real people behind every website whose job is to make sure you are kept safe and happy. They want you to keep coming back to their site. So they need to know about any problems you have.
Don’t share your password with your friends and make sure that you choose password that is easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess. Always include a number and some punctuation too. A question mark or a full stop makes your password much harder for someone else to guess.
Most people you meet online will be normal but sadly there are people online who are not who they seem. People sometimes pretend to be different: much older or younger than their real age. And it’s very easy to use a photo on a profile picture that isn’t really you. So a girl could in fact be a boy. Or a boy could in fact be a girl. Don’t take a risk and don’t meet anyone in real life you’ve only met online.
Nothing should make you feel uncomfortable or unhappy. Choose a friend, a parent or a teacher and tell them what’s happening. If they can’t help you tell someone else. Don’t keep it yourself.
c) Post-reading activity
Close everything and try to repeat all the safety tips(rules).
Work in groups and rank the tips according to their importance (from the most important to the least important according to your opinion). Discuss in groups which rules of safety you follow or don’t follow, which of them you think are the most important to follow.
Speak out and give some advice as for the safety online.
