T:  I want you to look at the blackboard and read the topic of our today’s lesson. There is a sentence here, but all the words in it are written together. Try to divide these words and read this sentence:” Friendship is a very great thing”.

Tell me please; is friendship important in our life?

That’s why today we are going to discuss some problems of friendship, especially how to be a real friend. So by the end of our lesson you should be able to speak about the qualities of a real friend, to use vocabulary on the topic in your speech, to give advice for everybody how to be a true friend. Also we’ll work on our grammar. To begin with I’d like you to start  with  the sounds. At first let’s train our tongues.

Фонетична зарядка.

T :  Lets read the words with the following sounds. Repeat after me.

      /f/ flag, flat, fat, forget

     /e/ set, leg, pen, bed

    /ei/ play, say, May

                                    Poem “My friend”

                           My friend

                           I’ve got a friend

                           We like to play,

                           We play together

                            Every day.

                                      When I’m in need

                                       For he’s my friend,

                                       Good friend indeed.

Перевірка домашнього завдання.

Your hometask was to find some expressions about  friendship. What is friendship? What does friendship mean to you? Isn't it the most important thing in our life?

P 1. The person can't live in isolation. It's very important for a human being to have a friend with whom you can be sincere and frank. It's great to think there is someone to turn to for help and advice, someone who will  stand by you in any situation and who will tell you the bitter truth If it is necessary.

P 2. Friendship means a lot  to me. I can't  simply imagine my life without friends: they make my life happier and more interesting. With my friends I can find solution to many problems. Real friendship is a thing that we cherish.

P 3. I think, friendship is very important in our life. Modern life is very interesting, full of wonders, danger and great opportunities. If you don't have friends, you don't have support, you don't  feel yourself comfortable.

Мовна розминка.

T: I quite agree with you that friendship is a very great thing. No wonder why people of all countries have so many proverbs about it. Try to say what proverbs and sayings come to your mind when you talk about friendship. Some of them are written here. Match them.

A friend in need ...

gotten as lost

A man is known ...

before he knows him

A man must eat a packet of salt with his friend..

is to be one

A  friend is not so soon ...

by the company he keeps

The only way to have a friend …

is a friend indeed

T: Read proverbs one by one!

Відповіді:

A friend in need is a friend indeed.
A man is known by the company he keeps.

A man must eat a packet of salt with his friend before he knows him.
A friend is not so soon gotten as lost.
The only way to have a friend is to be one

T:   I would like you to explain the meanings of some of them.

P1:  "The only way to have a friend is to be one" means that if you don't want to be alone, you don't have to be selfish. Just  think a little of others and they will think of you. People usually say "You are treated in the way you treat other people.

P2: The English proverb "A man must  eat a packet of salt with his friend before he knows him" doesn't mean that you need to eat much salt to become friends but you must know your friend very well. If you help, respect, trust each other and do useful and important things together, your friendship will last a very long time.

P3: I consider the phrase "A man is known by the company he keeps" up to date. In my opinion friends usually respect each other  for  these  or  those traits of character. They try to be similar and resemble each other in everything. They have much in common. There is another saying. "Tell me who your friend is and I'll tell you who you are".

P4: "A friend in need is a friend indeed" means that the best  friend is the one who helps you when you are really in need of help. You know your real friends when you are in a difficult situation. It's very difficult to go through the hardships of our life without our friend's support. Only they can give us a piece of good advice, can analyze our actions If friendship never  ends it makes your life full.

P5: The proverb "'A friend is not so soon gotten as lost" means that it takes a long time to become really friendly with somebody. But there are many ways of quickly loosing a friend if you do something wrong. So you must try to keep a close friendship.

T: Now look at the  cards and say what friendship means

Письмо

T:Complete the text with the words and phrases from the box.

I have a ... called Natalia. I've ... her for about 12 years now. We ... at work. She was a ... of mine at the company where I used to work, and we used to have our coffee breaks at the same time.

We .... Although we don't ... (we have quite different interests). We don't work together any more, and when I changed jobs we ... for a couple of years. But now we ... regularly. We phone each other once a week, and we see each other about twice a month. We don't often ..., only sometimes about films as we have completely different tastes!

T: Rewrite the exercise in your copybook and then read the result.

Аудіювання

T:Listen to the text  and answer the questions.

  1. When did she and Rose stop seeing each other?
  2. When did they lose touch?
  3. Why didn't she like the French teacher?
  4. What happened as a result?
  5. Why did she stop playing squash?
  6. Why does she prefer tennis?

I used to have a friend called Rosa. We were together at secondary school. When we were 16 she moved because of her father's job, but we kept in touch. We used to write long letters to each other — email didn't exist then. I went to stay with her a couple of times, too. We lost touch after university. I'd love to see her again. We used to be really good friends.

I used to hate a couple of teachers at school, but I suppose the one I hated the most was my French teacher. He was really horrible. I don't think he liked children or even teaching. He used to be rude to us and he didn't explain things well. I failed French — it was the only subject I ever failed at school.

I used to play a lot of squash, but I recently started playing tennis and now I much prefer it. The problem with squash is that it's pretty hard and aggressive. The great thing about tennis is that it's outdoors, and I play doubles with three friends. It's less competitive and more fun. The only problem is you can't play when it rains

Аудіювання

T: Listen to the text“A man and his friends” and be ready to answer the question.

“A man and his friends”

Once a man built a house. The house was nice but very small. He invited his friends to visit him. He wanted them to see his house. His friends came and looked at the house. But no one said anything good about it.

"The front of the house is not nice enough," said one. "The house is small and there are not enough windows in it," said another.

"Look at these windows!" cried the third. "They are so ugly!"

"Look at the roof!" said the fourth. "It will probably fall down when it snows."

"And the doors! They are not big enough."

"Have you ever seen such rooms?" asked another. "They are too small even for one man."

The man listened to his friends in silence. At last he said, "It may be true that my house is small. But it is also true that I haven't enough good friends who can live with me even in such a small house."

 Pre –listening task:
