Material: flashcards with pictures of school things and letters, 2 sets of handouts, a TV and a computer.

Lesson plan

1. Warm-Up (5-7 minutes):

• Greeting and Introduction: Greet the students and ask them how they are.
• Song “Hello how are you”

2. Main Part (30 minutes):

• Practicing Articles "A" and "An":

•           Stick on the blackboard a set of flashcards with words children have already learnt
•           Ask students to write the first letter of the word under each flashcard
•           Divide letters into two groups; consonant and vowels.
•           Revise the rule when to use “a” and “an”
•           Use “a” and “an” with each word from the flashcard

• Group work

•           Make up 4 groups. Give handout 1 for each group. (Handouts are printed on paper sheet A4.)

Set time limit of 2-3 minutes. Ask one representative of each group come to the blackboard. Stick handouts on the blackboard. Ask representatives of other groups to check and correct if needed

• Practicing vocabulary

•           Handouts 1 are still on the blackboard.
•           Ask one student of each group to come to the blackboard and tick school things on a sheet of paper
•           The set of flashcards is on the teacher’s table. Ask 1 student from each group to come and choose pictures of the words they have ticked on handouts 1. Stick them to the blackboard. Ask students to describe them.

e.g. It’s a bag. It’s big. It’s green/blue… It’s new/old

• Group work

•           4 groups. Each group has a puzzle with school things. Ask students to make up a picture

•           When students are ready ask them to tell what they can see

e.g. I can see a book. It’s red

3. Reflection and Wrap-Up (3-5 minutes):

• Review the Vocabulary: Quickly name the school items again and ask students to repeat after you.
• Class Reflection: Ask students to answer questions using "a" or "an" 

•           "What is in your school bag?"

e.g., I have gota pencil.

• Homework (optional): Give students a simple task to draw 5 school items and write the correct article next to each one.
