TEACHER'S NOTES AND KEY
Student: A2, about 11 years old (one-to-one lesson). Length: about 60 minutes.
Suggested timing: Warm up 7 · Vocabulary 8 · Reading 10 · Compare the bands 8 · Grammar 12 · Listening 8 · Speaking and writing 7. Homework is extra.
Hook (optional, before exercise 1): Play 30 seconds of Sabaton, then 30 seconds of MUR, and ask: "What do a Swedish metal band and a Ukrainian rap group have in common?"
Stage notes
Songs: "The Red Baron" and "Ty [Romantyka]" are used for the 30-second test. Extra Sabaton songs from your notes: "Shiroyama" (the last battle of the samurai) and "Christmas Truce" (British and German soldiers and a football match in 1914), good for talking about peace.
Check before class: Please listen to the songs and read the lyrics yourself to make sure they suit an 11-year-old. The other MUR track names in your notes ("Dorohu!" and "Krynytsia") should be checked too before you use them.
The writers' picture: It shows Ukrainian writers of the 1920s and 1930s, often called the "Executed Renaissance". Keep it short and age-appropriate: they were writers and poets whose work MUR wants people to remember. You can explain in his first language if needed.
Reading: Ask him to read aloud, then help with pronunciation (soldier, poet, rhythmic, preserve).
Listening: Lyric spotting works with the sound of the word too, so accept hands raised for words that sound similar.
