P1: Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence of the UK’s sovereigns since 1837 and today is the administrative headquarters of the Monarch. Despite being the place where many official events are held, the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace are also open to visitors every summer.
The Queen and the Royal Family stay at the Palace on weekdays. They have rooms on the first floor of the north wing. When the Queen is staying the Royal Standard flag is flown above the central balcony. The Queen has an office where she usually works. Prince Charles has his own office and library there.
Today Buckingham Palace is a working building where official meetings, royal events and different ceremonies take place. Each year the Palace is visited by more than 50.000 people who come to the State banquets, lunches and dinners.
P2: In fact, this tower is called Saint Stephens Tower, but people, even those who live in the UK, are used to calling it "Big Ben." Actually, Big Ben is the huge bell inside the building. Its weight is about thirteen tons and it rings every hour daily: once at one o'clock, twice at two o'clock and so on. However, people who live near the tower can hear at New Year’s Night how the bell strikes thirteen. It’s considered to be the biggest bell ever made in the country. The bell was firstly used in 1859 and was cracked soon because of the heavy hammer, which struck too strong. After this situation the hammer was changed, but that crack is still there.
There are many hypotheses for the origin of the name “Big Ben”. The most popular one suggests that the bell was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who was responsible for the installation. Some of people say he was really tall and that’s why this bell is called big, but the majority believe it is called Big because of its size.
Big Ben is one of the best-known landmarks in Europe. Nowadays the word Big Ben connects the bell, the clock and the tower at the same time. The tower is closed to the general public, but people with a "special interest" might offer an excursion for additional payment.
P3: British Museum
One of the most famous is the British Museum in London, which was established in 1753. It’s a museum of human history and culture. Its collections are amongst the largest in the world and originate from all continents. First of all, it’s a huge library with 6 or 7 million books, which is considered to be one of the largest in the world. According to the British law a copy of every book, pamphlet or periodical published in Britain must be kept in this museum. Secondly, the British Museum is a scientific institution, known as Natural History Museum, where internationally important collections are shown. This place inspires people to think about the natural environment differently and to take better care of the planet. Finally, there is a wonderful art gallery in the British Museum housing unique collections of sculpture, ceramics, drawings and paintings. It also has a great collection of Italian drawings.
P4: The National Gallery in London
The National Gallery in London, which was founded in 1824, possesses a rich collection of over 2 300 paintings dating from the mid-13th century to 1900. It is situated in Trafalgar Square. There you can find masterpieces of such painters as Gainsborough, Turner, Constable and also pictures of French, Spanish, Dutch and Flemish masters.
P5: The Palace of Westminster is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Many people would like to come here and see this place with his own eyes. This place is known as the House of Parliament. It’s situated near the river Thames in central London. The area of the building is huge, almost 115,000 sq.m. The building is pretty old, it was built in 1016 and after fire it was restructurated in 1840. Right now queen Elizabeth II is the owner of the House of Parliament.
P6: Throughout the history the Tower of London was not only a fortress. For many years starting from the Tudor period it was a royal residence. Then, in 16th and 17th centuries it was used as a prison, where lots of political and religious figures were held. The Tower is also known as a place of torture and execution, although only seven people were executed within the Tower. The more common place for executions was the notorious Tower Hill, north of the castle.
Later the Tower of London was the Royal Mint, an observatory, a zoo and a treasury. Since the time when it was a zoo, there is still a tradition to keep at least six ravens at the Tower. It is believed that they bring good luck if they stay there. Their wings are cut so that they can’t fly away. They are fed with meat and biscuits every day. Today the Tower is one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions. It is a museum where the beautiful jewels of the British royal family are on display. The security of the Tower is ensured by a military garrison and by the “beefeaters” who still wear their picturesque Tudor uniform.
The Tower of London will always be remembered as a symbol of royal power, a fortress for the monarch, and a prison for the monarch’s enemies.

The British Airways London Eye, sometimes called the Millennium Wheel, is the first-built and largest observation wheel in the world since the end of 1999. It is 135 meters high. The wheel has 32 closed and air conditioned passenger capsules. It moves at about 0.9 kilometers high so that one round take about 30 minutes. The wheel does not usually stop to take on passengers; the movement is so slow that passengers can easily walk on and off moving capsules. But it is stopped to give disabled or elderly passengers time to get off safely. Since it opening, the Eye has become one of the main tourist attractions.
