Topic: Nature. Environmental problems.

Objectives:

- to master listening, speaking, reading and writing skills;

- to summarise the knowledge on the topic;

- to revise grammar material;

- to develop students' ability to work in groups and pairs;

- to broaden students' outlook.

Equipment: a tape recorder, pictures, photos.

Procedure

Greeting

T: Good morning. Today we have an unusual lesson, as some guests have come to see us. Let us greet them.

Ps: good morning. We are glad to see you. The subject of our lesson is “Nature. Environmental Protection.”

Today we are going to talk about the world’s problems, such as pollution, deforestation and rubbish.

We should revise the material on the topic and write the essay.

I hope, you are ready. So, let’s start!

Warm up

Association game

I give you the word and you tell me any associative word to it.

We have identified that the world is not only beautiful, but also everything is connected on the Earth. But the situation is not ideal now. Listen to a saying and tell me what the problem is.

When the last tree has been cut down, the last fish caught, the last river poisoned, only then will we realize that one cannot eat money.” (Greenpeace message)

There are lots of problems facing our planet today. You know the Earth’s resources won’t last forever.

Main part

Task 1

Look at the board and say only one word to describe the pictures.

Rubbish, water pollution, electronic waste, deforestation, air pollution.

Task 2

Match proverbs and sayings with their meanings

1. An oak is not felled at one stroke.

2. Better a little fire to warm us, than a great one to burn us.

3. Caution is the parent of safety.

4. Charity begins at home.

The next Task 3 is to read Ex. 1 p. 60 and do activities.

The number of private vehicles on our roads is constantly environmental problems. In my opinion, banning all private transport in our towns and cities could be a good idea, as it would reduce pollution levels and therefore improve our quality of life.

Firstly, our cities would be far healthier without constant streams of traffic. For example, fewer cars and motorcycles would vastly improve air quality; and harmful gases that contribute to global warming would be greatly reduced. Also, public transport systems would improve and everyone would get to their destinations much faster.

Moreover, we would be safer. More people would choose to walk or cycle to work or school. As a result, increasing pand causing serious there would be fewer road accidents.

On the other hand, some people argue that a total ban on private transport restricts people's rights and freedom. Rather than a ban, they simply suggest encouraging the public to use buses and trains more, by making them cheaper to ride and more accessible.

All in all, after public transport is improved, I feel that a ban on private transport could be an effective way to create better towns and cities. People could commute more efficiently in a cleaner environment.

Write your essay about ecological problems in our town. Use phrases from the Useful Language box.

Summing-up

Look at the board. You can see a road and paper steps. Now you should come to the board, write your idea about improving life in our town.

It’s time to finish our lesson. You’ve done great work. You have to prepare a multimedia presentation about the environmental issues today at home. Thank you for your attention.
