Procedure:

І. Introduction

Greetings

Teacher: The topic of our today’s lesson is television. Before the start I want you to listen to one opinion and think over this idea.

Video (Додаток на диску)

Roal Dahl

It rots the senses in the head!

It kills imagination dead!

It clogs and clutters up the mind!

It makes a child so dull and blind

He can no longer understand

A fantasy, a fairyland!

His brain becomes as soft as chees!

His powers of thinking rust and freeze!

He cannot think – he only sees!

Teacher: What is this poem about?

What idea does the author express?

Do you agree with this point of view?

Teacher: So the aim of our lesson is to discuss the idea and come to a conclusion whether TV is good or evil.

And then we’ll be able to work out the pattern of the ideal TV-channel.

ІІ. The main part

1. Lexical exercises

Teacher: But first let’s review the material of the topic

1) Find the odd word in the line

  • A show, cartoons, to watch, a programme
  • Spreading news, enrich knowledge, entertain public, current events
  • Documentaries, thriller, wildlife programmes, historical issues, educational programmes
  • Viewers, station, channel, programme

2) Match the words with their definitions

Working with the textbook, ex. 1 p. 72

3) Make up sentences

To keep                    programmes                     about current events

To follow                       opinion                       in different spheres

To enrich                     pictures                             and imagination

To influence             informed                       in science and culture

To bring                   knowledge                       into millions of homes

To broadcast       developments                       of different kinds

1) tv news keep us     informed about current events

2) Documentaries allow us to follow the developments in science and culture

3)Tv helps to enrich our knowledge in different spheres

4) Tv programmes influence our opinion and imagination

5) Tv brings moving pictures into millions of homes

6) Tv channels broadcast programmes of different kinds

4) Fill in the gap

Public, global, commercials, annoying, imagine, satellite, stations, concentrate

We can’t____________ our life without TV. There are_____________ and commercial TV______________. ________________TV channels are the result of __________________TV. TV gets its funds mostly from ________________,  that can be very _______________ sometimes. But many people don’t _____________when viewing.

At the end students check their works themselves, using the answers on the presentation slides

5) Express your opinion

1) Watching TV you become a ‘couch potato’

I disagree. I think TV is good but needs to fix time limits. If you spend all day in front of TV you can become a couch itself.

2) TV stops you doing interesting things

I agree. TV is just a waste of time, It brings you nothing useful

3) TV is better than cinema

I disagree. Cinema gives us more vivid emotions, besides we go to the cinema with friends and can share our impressions

4) TV helps to relax

I agree. I always relax in front of TV just watching a comedy or some shows

5) TV is better than books

I don’t agree. Reading books we develop our imagination and TV gives only one variant of the picture, not living space for thinking.

2. Developing listening skills

Teacher: I see you are ready to start our discussion. Now you’ll hear the fragments of some TV programmes. Your task is to guess what kind of programme is that and decide whether it is good for you to watch and why or it is not important or even harmful. So let’s start.

First you’ll listen only to the sound and guess the kind of programme (the teacher closes the lines of the projector), then you can see the video. After students have guessed the programme they vote using their flashcards for the good or for the bad kind of programme it is.

1) news

2) cartoon

3) live match

4) sport programme

5) commercial

6) talk-show

7) movie

After students have named the programme they express their opinion whether it is good or bad, give their arguments and the teacher sticks the name of the programme on the appropriate placard

3.Practicing  scanning reading

Every student gets a short text. The task is to read the text, find out the main idea of the text, write it on the shit of paper and then read aloud and stick to the right placard. Students must say why idea  is for or against television. The model of the answer  : The …. thinks that…..

A child

Television entertains me. I can have fun watching cartoons, my favourite sitcoms and just switching the channels. It doesn’t interfere my studying, I can do my lessons in front of TV and do them good. Unfortunately my parents don’t agree.

A teacher

Some pupils do their homework in front of the TV. It influences the quality of their learning. Some pupils are so attract by TV that they don’t do their homework at all. I’m worried about that children’s obsession. (TV influences the quality of studying)

A librarian

Watching TV  children no longer read books. They prefer passive watching and loose the reading skills that are the keys to all higher study. They lose the ability to imagine, to plunge into the world of fantasy. TV gains popularity because it demands minimal efforts while reading books develops logical thinking.

A student

TV brings the world to our living-rooms. We see people in our country and in other lands and learn their customs, opinions and problems. We can better understand each other and then hope for peace and closer contacts.

A sportsman

Many boys and girls watch TV instead of outside activities that could bring them so much good. Watching sport programs often substitute doing sport or just playing with friends, but passive sitting with chips and Cola won’t make you fitter.

A doctor

Constant watching TV may lead to poor health through rushed meals, lack of sleep, lack of exercise and eyestrain. 2-3 hours daily watching TV can cause you problems with your spine and growing obesity.

A businessman

TV helps me to relax after a hard day’s work. I can then cope better with the next day’s work. I can restore energy and have fun. Besides I needn’t going anywhere, just relax in my  favourite arm-chair with my family.

A teenager

We become better informed by watching documentaries, science programmes and discussions and by learning about the most important economic, social and political issues of the day.

A housewife

TV helps me to have a rest from my everyday work and to emerge into other people’s life. It’s like a window to the world when I have no possibility to go out.

A psychologist

Some children have made watching TV their main leasure activity and they are not enriching their personalities by developing hobbies and socializing. Later they have problems with communication, making friends and getting married. (Watching TV causes problems with socializing)

A politician

TV programmes gather big audiences. Apart from their entertainment value, they provide useful topics of conversation and influence people’s thoughts change their opinions into what we need.

An old woman

TV is a waste of time and after you’ve been watching it for 3 hours your eyes start hurting. If you watch TV every day you could soon be wearing glasses like me.

A driver

There’s quite a lot of rubbish on TV. I can watch a programme or two every day but mostly I prefer watching old DVD or reading. TV is like a chewing gum for the eyes, I don’t want to get used to it.

A nurse

I can’t imagine my life without TV. It’s the fastest mean of spreading information and news. I always watch local news to discuss the topics the next day with my friends. Besides everything is much more real on TV.

A postman

There are thousands of TV stations but mostly they broadcast the same films and programmes often of not very high quality. It is better to go to the cinema and get real pleasure.

A musician

As for me I always try to watch interesting films, different TV games and musical programmes. TV is the only way of getting news without spending money on newspapers and internet.

A worker

TV channels only try to attract viewers’ by searching for some extraordinary information that is not always true. They don’t care of our feelings and don’t think about consequences.

Every student gets a card with questions. The time is 2 minutes

    a) 1 hour

    b) 2-3 hours

    c) 4 hours and more

   a) to watch TV

   b) to read a book

   c) to go for a walk

   d) to search the Internet

5. Developing writing skills

Dear students, now your task is to write a short article. You are a reporter in the local newspaper “Teenager’s life”. You’ve got the task to write the article “Teenagers and TV”. Write your opinion on the role of television in the life of a teenager. Include the information:

  • What role does the TV plays in life of a typical teenager
  • How much time a day you watch TV
  • What programmes do you prefer
  • What you recommend to watch

I’d like to tell about____________________________________________

First of all I want to stress that ____________________________________________________________

I usually watch________________________________________________

While the students do the writing the teacher analyses the questionnaire and sticks the results on the blackboard.
