Topic. Shopping. Healthy Food.

 

Aims: to develop listening skills, to practise students’ habits of speaking and sharing

           information; to generate interest.

 

Aids: video “ At the grocery”, cards, decorations.

 

Procedure

 

  1. Introduction.

 

  1. Greeting and defining the aims of the lesson.

We’ve learnt a lot of words to speak about food and shops. Today

           we’re speaking about the most popular kinds of shopping and ,of course,

                    about our health.

 

  1. Warming up

               Look! Shop windows are so bright.

  They are coloured, they are light.

  Window-shopping says: “Oh, hi!

  Would you like to come in and buy?

 

  - Do you often go shopping?

  - Do you like window shopping?

  - What shop windows attract your eye?

 

  1. The main part

 

3. Speaking.

 

  What shops are there in our country?

  What do we buy at the grocery (florist’s…)?

  What shops are there in our town?

 1. We buy bread at the baker’s.

 2. Meat is sold at the grocery.

 3. People can buy flowers at the chemist’s.

 4. We buy sweets at the confectionery.

 5. A furniture shop sells pets.

 6. We buy rings and chains at the jewellery.

 8. A greengrocery sells fruits and vegetables.

 I’m going to organize a party for my daughter. But I have no ideas what to buy and what to cook. Can you help me?

     6. Work in groups.

 

 Take the pictures (romantic shopping, everyday shopping, school shopping, birthday shopping) and stick the appropriate picture according to these groups.

 

      7. Shape – writing.

 

 Write about you favourite shopping place.

 

      8. Video-presentation “At the grocery”

   What do you expect to see?

  -Watching

   Write the food they’ve bought.

  -After – watching.

   You see, the rules of rainbow foods are very interesting. If you eat them, you will be always healthy.

   Write fruits and vegetables of the rainbow colours.

 

      9. Matching the parts of the proverbs and explaining them.

 

  - After dinner sit a while, after supper walk a mile.

  - Eat at pleasure, drink with measure.

  - An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

   - Dry bread at home is better than roast meat abroad.

   - His bread  is buttered on both sides.

   - The appetite comes with eating.

   - Don’t live to eat, but eat to live.

 

     10. Phraseology.

 

  There is a phraseological expression: “A pot of gold” .

  It means “a healthy body”.

  What food should we eat to be healthy?

  Write on this “pot”.

 

      11. a) Reading a dialogue “Vegetarians’

 

  -Who is a vegetarian?

-A person who doesn’t eat meat.

-Who is a vegan?

-A person who doesn’t eat any kind of animal products, such as butter, eggs, milk or even honey.

-Why do people become vegetarians?

-Some people dislike the taste of meat.

-That is their point of view you know the English proverb “Tastes differ”

-Some people believe that keeping and killing animals for food is cruel.

-In this item I may agree with them.

-Some people believe that vegetarians are healthier.

-Yes, they are rather fitter and they don’t usually have weight problems because they consume less animal fat but they don’t get enough proteins with vegetarian food. They have to eat nuts, beans and other types of food rich in protein.

-Some people are vegetarians for religious reason.

-Vegetarianism is one of the central beliefs of Hinduism.

 

                    b) After-reading task (6 hats)

 

  Pupils get a “thinking hat” and discuss the problem from different points of 

  view. 

 

     12. Speaking.

 

  Is your eating healthy?

  Do you eat healthy food or junk food?

 

  1. Feedback and assessing.

 

13. I hope you’ll remember these rules of healthy eating. Try to follow them every day.

 

14. Homework.

 

     Write about the rules of healthy eating.
