World of Flowers (Form 5)

Objectives:

- to promote students' linguistic and communicative competence in listening, reading and speaking;

- to improve pronunciation and spelling skills;

- to promote students' cognitive abilities;

- to develop thinking and creative imagination;

- to encourage students' desire to make their country a better place to live in.

Equipment: topical pictures and illustrations, the presentation "World Flowers", a cartoon "It's Spring Time", handouts.

                                                       Procedure

I. Introduction

T: Hello, everyone! It's nice to see you here. I hope you are well and ready to start our lesson. Look around and try to guess about the topic of our lesson.

Ss: We are going to speak about flowers.

T: You are right. The topic of our lesson is "World of Flowers". Today you are going to revise the vocabulary on the topic "World of Flowers", develop your listening, reading and speaking skills.

*Phonetic Drills

T: Let's begin with the phonetic drill. Listen to the rhyme and try to pronounce correctly.

I like flowers that are bright.

I like flowers that are white?

I like flowers with a smell.

I like flowers very well.

II. The Main Part

*Vocabulary Practice

T: And now it's time for vocabulary. We are going to practice flowers names. Your task is to match the picture to the word.

*Reciting Poems and speaking

T: Well done! You know the names of flowers very well. By the way, do you like flowers?

Ss: Yes, we do.

T: What flowers do you like?

S1: I like spring flowers. They are nice. I know a poem about one of them.

S1: Sweet and fresh are violets

On every hill and dell.

And, oh! How beautiful they are!

How lovely do they smell.

T: Thank you! Who wants to recite a poem about flowers?

S2: The bluebell is the sweetest flower

That wakes in summer.

Its blossoms nave the mightiest power

To soothe my spirits care.

S3: A dandelion yellow as gold,

What do you do all day?

I just wait here in the tall green grass

Till the children come to play

A dandelion yellow as gold,

What do you do all night?

I just wait here till the cold dew falls

And my hair grows long and white.

And what do you do when your hair is white

And the children come to play?

They take me up in their little hands

And blow my hair away.

* Listening Comprehension

T: Look at the screen and watch the cartoon "It's Spring Time"(from "Little Einsteins" series, Disney Junior, the USA).

Your task is to watch, to listen attentively and to get ready for answer the questions.

1) What is the title of the cartoon?

2) Who wrote the music to accompany the cartoon?

3) What is the cartoon about?

4) What is Baby  Tulip's favourite season?

5) What country is Baby Tulip flying to?

* Relaxation Time

T: Let's sing "The Spring Time" from the cartoon.  When you hear "Spring Time", raise your hands like this and sing along.

Oh yes, oh yes, it's spring time.

Oh yes, oh yes, it's spring time.

It's spring time.

T: Very well. Children, did you like the song? I'm sure, you did.

* Guessing Riddles

T: Guess what flower it is.

1. It is a summer flower. It is blue like the sky. Its dress looks like a bell. What is it? (a bluebell)

2. This flower is blue but it is not a bluebell. It makes summer fields beautiful. What is it? (a cornflower)

3. It is a very small flower but it is not afraid of cold winds and snow. What is it? (a snowdrop)

4. The flower has got many tiny bells and its dress is white. A lot of people like its smell. What flower is it? (a lily- of-the-valley)

T: I see you know the names of flowers perfectly well.

* Reading Practice

T:  Now, you'll read the text "Flowers" in a chain. After reading you have to complete the sentences on the cards according to the text.

                                            Flowers

 

Let us going to the garden, to the forest or to the field. How many flowers you will see there! Every month of spring and summer brings  us some new flowers. In April we have violets and snowdrops. In May we have dandelions, lilies-of-the-valley and lilac. In June we have roses, lilies, daffodils, tulips and bluebells. In July we have forget-me-nots, cornflowers and pinks.

In summer we like to pick flowers and make them into bunches. Flowers are beautiful. The roses are red, pink, white and yellow. So are the tulips. The violet is purple. The dandelion is yellow and it looks like a little sun.

T: Are you ready to complete the sentences? (cards)

III. Summing-up. Reflection. Home Assignment

T: Our lesson is coming to its end. You were active, hardworking and smart. Now we have got a few minutes and I suggest you to make a cinquain with the word Flower.

                                         Beautiful, bright

                                          Plant, draw, enjoy

                                          We like nature.

                                               Plants

T: How do you feel after lesson? Did you like our communication at the lesson?

T:  Your homework will be unusual, I think. You have to fill in the rhyme on the card with the words from the box. Draw and colour the birthday card according to its description.

Pretty, love, violets, blue, pink, rose, card, forget-me-nots

                                      I have a little birthday....

                                     That someone sent to me.

                                     It's ... and white,

                                    And red and blue.

                                     And ... as can be.

                                     ... are round the edge

                                    And finy ... too.

                                     And such a lovely piece of lace

                                    The very palest... .

                                    And in the centre there's a...

                               And it is written all in gold

                               "To you with ... fromme".
