Lesson plan: Buying clothes. Using "Whose"
Skill focus: Listening
Level: Grade 5 (A1–A2)
Lesson objectives:
By the end of the lesson, learners will:
understand the use of the question word “whose” in context;
recognize and respond to “whose” questions in a conversation;
improve listening comprehension through a short clothes shopping dialogue;
use “whose” to ask and answer questions about clothing items.
Lesson stages:
1. Warm-up
Greet the class with a smile and energy.
Quick game: "What's missing?" – show flashcards of clothing items, then hide one and ask what is missing.
Ask: “What clothes do you like to wear when you go shopping?”
2. Lead-in
Show a short cartoon or image of people in a clothing store.
Ask:
“Where are they?”
“What are they doing?”
3. Pre-listening
Pre-teach or review vocabulary:
T-shirt, trousers, dress, jacket, shoes, shop assistant, customer
Introduce “whose”:
Example: Whose jacket is this? – It’s Ben’s.
Practice as a class: Show items and ask: Whose is this?
Use names of learners to personalize (“Whose bag is this?” “It’s Olha’s.”)
4. Listening
First listening – for gist:
Play a short audio of a customer and shop assistant in a clothes shop.
Ask: “What are they buying?”
Second listening – for detail:
Give worksheets with tasks:
Tick the clothes you hear
Match items to people (Anna – red jacket)
Who says it? (Customer or assistant?)
Listen and circle the correct “Whose” sentence
5. Post-listening
Pair speaking activity:
Each pair gets pictures of clothes or real items (can be printed or classroom objects).
One asks: Whose is this...? The other answers using names.
Example: “Whose hat is this?” — “It’s Max’s hat.”
Group challenge: “Lost and found” – match items to names using "whose" questions.
6. Homework
Task: Draw three clothing items and write sentences using whose.
Example: “Whose scarf is this? It’s my sister’s scarf.”
Optional: Record yourself asking 2 questions with “whose”.
7. Feedback and reflection
Ask: “What new word did you learn today?”
“Can you ask a question with ‘whose’?”
Thumbs up/down/middle activity to reflect how they felt about the lesson.
