Lesson plan: Nature in Ukraine (Listening)

Grade: 5
Skills focus: Listening
Vocabulary: winding canyon, mountain, waterfall, hill, pines, steppe

1. Warm-up

  • Show pictures of Ukrainian nature (mountain, steppe, canyon.)
  • Ask questions:
    – Do you like nature?
    – Have you been to the mountains?
    – What nature can we see in Ukraine?

2. Lead-in

  • Write the words on the board: winding canyon, mountain, waterfall, hill, pines, steppe
  • Show images or flashcards and say the words aloud.
  • Have learners repeat after you (choral and individual repetition).
  • Quick vocabulary matching game (word ↔ picture)

3. Pre-listening

  • Tell learners: You will listen to a short text about Ukrainian nature.
  • Predict:
    – What words do you think you will hear?
    – What places are beautiful in Ukraine?
  • Pre-teach tricky words if needed (e.g., “winding”, “canyon”)

 4. Listening

First Listening (Gist):

  • Task: Circle the words you hear from the list on the board.

Second Listening (Detailed):

  • Task: Match the words with descriptions (e.g., “A high place with trees” → mountain / “A flat, grassy land” → steppe)
  • Optional: Fill-in-the-blank or multiple choice task.

 5. Post-Listening

  • Pair work:
    – Ask and answer questions:
What did you hear about the steppe? What’s your favorite natural place in Ukraine?
  • Group drawing: Create a “Ukrainian nature map” using the learned vocabulary and draw them.
  • Short oral quiz: “Which word means a big rock valley?” – Canyon.

 6. Homework

Task options:

  • Draw and label your favorite nature place in Ukraine using 3–4 new words.
  • Write 5 sentences using today’s words (simple: “There is a canyon.”)

7. Feedback & reflection

  • Thumbs up/down/side for:
    – Did you like the listening?
    – Was it easy or hard?
  • Ask learners:
    – What new word do you remember?
    – What did you like the most today?
