The aims of the lesson:
‒ Practical: to practice active vocabulary; to form speaking, reading skills; to improve dialogical and monological speech.
‒ Educational: to improve pupils’ knowledge about modal verbs.
‒ Developing: to develop students’ memorization, concentration; to continue to form speaking and reading skills.
‒ Cultural: to know the new information about famous sportsmen and their favourite sports.
Equipment: a text-book “We Learn English” by Alla Nesvit, presentation, blackboard, pictures.
Procedure of the Lesson
T.: Good morning, everybody! I hope you are ready for your English lesson. Today we’ll speak about famous sportsmen and their achievements (Slide 1). But, firstly, read the report about your favourite kind of sport (Slide 2).
II. Warm – up
T.: let’s play the game «Guess the famous sportsmen».
P.1: Lionel Messi ― is an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a forward for Spanish club Barcelona and the Argentina national team. Messi is the only football player in history to win the Golden Ball and the first player to win three European Golden Shoes (Slide 3).
P.2: Maria Sharapova ― is a Russian professional tennis player, who is ranked world № 6 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). She is also an Olympic medalist, having earned silver for Russia in women's singles at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London (Slide 4).
P.3: Gerard Pique ― is a Spanish professional footballer who plays as a central defender for FC Barcelona and the Spain national team (Slide 5).
P. 4: David Beckham ― is an English former professional footballer. He played for Manchester United, Preston North End, Real Madrid, Milan, LA Galaxy, Paris Saint-Germain, and the England national team. He was twice runner-up for FIFA World Player of the Year and in 2004 he was named in the FIFA 100 list of the world's greatest living players (Slide 6).
P. 5: Yana Klochkova ― is a Ukrainian swimmer, who has won five Olympic medals in her career, with four of them being gold. She is Master of Sports, World Class and the only multi gold medal holder (more than two) in Ukraine (Slide 7).
T.: Yes, everybody are right. And these persons are the real professionals in the sport.
T: What role does sport play in our life?
P. 1: Sport plays the great role in our life, because sport is one of the ways of bringing up a healthy and harmonious person. Sport for some people it’s the best opportunity to develop and realize their talents and abilities.
T.: What is the difference between professional and amateur sports?
P.2: People, who go in for sport at the professional level get pay for it, want to show the best results in his career. And amateurs go in for sport for their enjoyment and don’t get the pay.
T.: What are the most popular winter and summer sports?
P. 3: The most popular winter sports are hockey, skiing, skating, snowboarding. The most popular summer sports are basketball, volleyball, lawn-tennis, badminton.

Jeremy was the captain1 of the basketball team, the Flyers. This season2 they needed one more player for their team.
Jeremy’s younger sister, Melanie, trained a lot for the tryout3. Soon Jeremy and Melanie were at home.
“I know Melanie, you are tired. I’ll clean your room,” said Jeremy. “Will you?” said Melanie.
“Sure. And since you are so tired, you won’t try out for the Flyers tomorrow.”
“Don’t worry, Jeremy,” said Melanie. “I’ll play the best at the tryouts.”
The next morning many boys and girls tried out to shoot the ball4 into the basket. All the team members decided that Melanie was the best.
“Welcome to the Flyers, Melanie! You can run fast, jump high and really throw a basketball,” they said.
Jeremy smiled. He was proud of his sister.
