Lesson plan in the 5th form 

Theme: Food

Level: A1

Outcome: to talk about the food students like and dislike

Materials: SB English Plus-1 2nd edition, CD, power point presentation

Procedure

  1. Lead in

First of all I’d like to ask you whether you had breakfast today?

Raise your hands who ate e.g. eggs, sandwiches, porridge, nothing for breakfast.

Was it your perfect breakfast?

Look at the picture and tell what you see.

In pairs discuss what would you prefer to have for breakfast?

Share your ideas with the class.

So, can you tell me the theme of our lesson?

Yes, it’s “Food”

 

 

 

  1. Practice

Look at the pictures and tell which lunches you like best?

 

  • Reading
  • Open your books on p.52, study the pictures and

 

 

 

 

  •  
  •  
  • explain the words ‘outside’ and  ‘vending machine”
  • would you like to have a vending machine at school? Why?
  • Read the texts and choose correct words. (ask students how much time do they need to complete the task and set the limit e.g. 2 min) pupils compare answers in pairs, then listen and check.

Check that students know/understand all the words e.g. snack (ask to name some snacks), fizzy drinks (ask to name some fizzy drinks), chicken (ask what meals may contain chicken, what other kinds of meat they know) etc.

  • How does the Australian student describe the food he has at school? – Tasty
  • What other words to describe food can you name? – delicious, sweet, nice, horrible …..
  • Good job! And now you know a lot of words connected with food, can you name them? (you could ask students to name the words one by one or you could do it as a race: divide students into pairs/teams and ask to write as many words as they remember). 
  • Excellent! Now it’s time to fill a word web.

  • Have you noticed that we have a lot of food-words with sounds/ I /and/ i:/?
  • Let’s drill some of them.  Students listen to the audio, fill in the table, we then check the task as a class and after play the audio again for students to repeat the words. (You could ask students to name more words with these sounds)

  • Well done! And now, can you remind me what your favorite food is?
  • OK. Now let’s listen to the stories of some people about their favorite food. So, your task is to listen and to note down each student’s favorite food. Here we go! (check answers as a class, don’t forget to ask pupils whether they agree with speakers or no)

 

  • What phrases did speaker use when they told about the food. Look at the ex.5 and read through the Key phrases.

Key phrases:

I (quite/really) like…

I don’t mind…

I (really) don’t like…

I hate…

 

Now we listen to the audio again and complete key phrases with speakers’ ideas. (check answers as a class).

Freer practice: So, now it’s students turn to tell about their likes and dislikes.  Pupils work in pairs, ask and answer the questions using the example question, key phrases and the vocabulary of the lesson

  • Do you like fizzy drinks/burgers/soup…?
  • No, I don’t like/I really don’t mind…./Yes, I really like fizzy drinks….
