Part 1. Warming up.

Teacher: Good morning , pupils!

Pupils: good morning , teacher!

T: As you know, our world has a lot of problems with the natural environment such as pollution, damage of the ozone layer, deforestation, global warming, natural disasters, changing of climate and so on. Today we have  summarising lesson on topic “Its Your Planet!” and I would like to ask you some questions and to revise your knowledge . So,  lets start !

T:What is our environment?

P:The environmenrt is the sum total of all surroundings of a living organism, including natural forces and other living things, which provide conditions for development and growth as well as of danger and damage.

T: How can you explain the meaning of the word ”smog”?

P:This word is a combination of 2 words  SMOKE and FOG. Firstly it appeared in England because of bad air  quality in the 19th  century.

T:What do you know about global warming?

P: a major report on global warming has warned that average world temperatures may rise by several degrees due to the build up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere of the Earth. As a result, the Earth gets hotter the ice caps and glasiers may melt  and the sea levels may rise.

T: What is the difference between 2 words  TO  POLLUTE and TO CONTAMINATE?

P: TO  POLLUTE means to make air , water, soil dangerously dirty and not suitable for all living organisms to use. TO CONTAMINATE  means  to make a place dirty or harmful by CHEMICAL or POISON.

T: Thanks. and  now let’s watch a video about environment in Great Britain.

(Video WINDOW ON BRITAIN)

T:During studying  the  topic about the environmental problems , you have searched   some global problems of our planet . And   you are  representing  your research  now .

The 1st group “We are for clean environment”. 1) What types of pollution do you ?2) What are the reasons of pollution? 3) How can people solve the problem of pollution?

P1: Our group have found out the problem of pollution. 'POLLUTION', the most commonly used word in our everyday life relating to the destruction of the natural air we breathe, the water we drink and the land we live on. No doubt the world is rapidly developing in every area possible which makes our lives much easier to live but on the other hand forgetting that we ourselves are destroying the natural resources.

P2: Many environmental researches have proved that it is because of the rapid growth in technology and other areas of growth that leads to a massive increase the growth of pollution. The unexpected pollution caused is mainly due to the human activities.

P3:One of the major causes of air pollution is the release of carbon di oxide into the atmosphere. This happens because of deforestation and fossil fuel burning.

P4:Contamination of available natural water by industrial wastes and other waste products can be defined as water pollution. Causes of water pollution  includes waste products from factories, waste from sewage, waste from power plants , waste from underground coal mines and waste from oil wells.

P5:The contamination of and with different kinds of wastes is called land pollution. The major causes of land pollution are construction, domestic waste , industrial waste and agriculture. Plastic factories, oil refineries, nuclear waste disposals, and large animal farms, all lead to land pollution.

P6:One more type of pollution is noise pollution. Noise pollution is caused when noise which is an unpleasant sound affects our ears and leads to psychological problems like stress, hypertension, hearing impairment, etc. It is caused by machines in industries, loud music, etc.

P7:Pollution lead to large problems such as: dirty water,  acid rains,  ozone layer depletion, damage of human health and health of animals, etc. Pollution not only affects  humans ; it also affects the nature, plants, fruits, vegetables, rivers, ponds, forests, animals, etc, on which they are highly dependent for survival. It is crucial to control pollution as the nature, wildlife and human life are precious gifts to the mankind.

The 2nd group  “Forests are the lungs of our planet”. 1) Why do people cut down forests? 2) Effects of deforestation in Ukraine. 3)How to solve the problems of destroying the  forests?

P1: Our group have searched the problem of deforestation around the world and in our Carpathian Mountains. Trees are lungs of our planet. They give us oxygene  and absorb carbon dioxide, they protect soil from erosion.

P2: But nowadays people destroy forests around the world. They cut down  trees for having fields  for planting crops. However, deforestation is very dangerous  for the environment. Firstly, the wildlife loses the area of living. Secondly, the soil suffers of erosion. Thirdly, deforestation leads to floods in some regions of the world. The last research say that one adult tree can absorb about 1 thousand liters of water.

P3:According to our search, during the last 50  years  a great deal of forests in the Carpathians has been cut down . It leads to changes in local climate. That is why we have so much trouble with floods in this region. The scientists remind us that all elements and systems are interconnected in nature . Irresponsible attitude to  it might lead to terrible results.

P4:Forests in the Ukrainian Carpathians are called the LUNGS of Europe and they  are on the verge of extinction as the country faces an ecological disaster of unprecedented proportions. Illegal loggers are illegally trafficking abroad entire trains of fir trees, earning millions of dollars. According to local residents, deforestation has dramatically intensified over the past two years.

P5:The scale of the disaster can be seen in shocking photos of bird’s eye views of cleared mountain slopes which have been were published on the Internet. One of these photos is the southern slope of the Popadia Mountain at the junction of the Zakarpattia and Ivano-Frankivsk regions of the country, where logging is strictly prohibited by law. Officials deny mass uncontrolled felling of trees. They say the rate of cutting complies with the norms of the preservation of the forest resource.

P6: The Effects of Deforestation are disastrous , they are Climate Imbalance, Increase in Global Warming, Soil Erosion, Floods, Wildlife Extinction and so on.

The 3rd group “What do you know about ozone layer” 1)The necessity of ozone layer. 2) What damage ozone layer and why it is dangerous? 3) How can people stop destroying of ozone layer?

P1:The ozone layer forms a thick layer in stratosphere, encircling the earth,  that has large amount of ozone in it. The ozone layer protects life on earth from strong ultraviolet radiation that comes from the sun. Ultraviolet rays are harmful rays that can drive up the risk of deadly disorders like skin cancer, cataracts and damage the immune system. Ultraviolet rays are also capable of destroying single cell organism, terrestrial plant life, and aquatic ecosystems.

P2:The ozone layer was discovered in 1913 by the French physicists Charles Fabry and Henri Buisson. The ozone layer has the capability to absorb almost 97-99% of the harmful ultraviolet radiations that sun emit and which can produce long term devastating effects on humans beings as well as plants and animals.

P3:An essential property of ozone molecule is its ability to block solar radiations of wavelengths less than 290 nanometers from reaching Earth’s surface. In this process, it also absorbs ultraviolet radiations that are dangerous for most living beings. UV radiation could injure or kill life on Earth.

P4:Causes of Ozone Layer Depletion Credible scientific studies have substantiated that the cause of ozone layer depletion is human activity, specifically, human-made chemicals that contain chlorine or bromine.. The scientists have observed reduction in stratospheric ozone since early 1970’s.

P5:There are two regions in which the ozone layer has depleted.

In the mid-latitude, for example, over Australia, ozone layer is thinned. This has led to an increase in the UV radiation reaching the earth. It is estimated that about 5-9% thickness of the ozone layer has decreased, increasing the risk of humans to over-exposure to UV radiation owing to outdoor lifestyle.

P6:In atmospheric regions over Antarctica, ozone layer is significantly thinned, especially in spring season. This has led to the formation of what is called ‘ozone hole’. Ozone holes refer to the regions of severely reduced ozone layers. Usually ozone holes form over the Poles during the onset of spring seasons. One of the largest such hole appears annually over Antarctica between September and November.

P7: Serious Effects of Ozone Depletion are   Damage to human health, Devastation to environment, Threat to marine life, Effect on animals, Impacts certain materials (Materials like plastics, wood, fabrics, rubber are massively degraded by too much ultraviolet radiation)

T: I`ll give these envelopes and there you can find  sentences.  Now you have to make up the text about protection of our environment.

Song “ The Earth Song” - fragment

T: And what are your suggestions about protection of our environment.

P;1 We should become GREEN.

Pupils take green leaves and stick them on the Earth

Ways to prevent ozone depletion

1. Limit private vehicle driving

2. Use eco-friendly household cleaning products

3. Avoid using pesticides

4. Developing regulations for rocket launches

5. Banning the use of dangerous nitrous oxide

How to Stop Pollution

1.Walk or ride your bike whenever possible

2. Choose local food whenever possible. Transporting food from across the country and around the world requires a considerable amount of fuel

3. Turn off lights and electronics when you are not in the room. Plugging electronics into a power strip is also a good strategy

4. Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling. Buy reusable items. Lots of waste is generated by disposable cups, plates, utensils and storage containers for food.

5.Keeping Chemicals Out of the Water Supply .Use fewer and environmentally friendly chemicals.

How to stop deforestaition

Restrain  the felling of trees, by employing a series of rules and laws to govern it.

Clear cutting of forests must be banned.

Also the cutting must  be replaced by  planting young trees to replace the older ones that were cut.

Plant trees in your garden, near your work, around your place – somewhere you want.

In spring students of our class are going to plant tree in the yard of our school.

T: Students of the class prepared some recommendations to our guests

HOW TO BECOME GREEN

How to become GREEN – буклети

T:Thanks  for your searching. Now our lesson is over. Goodbye.
