Subject: Popular Sports and Games.

Objectives: - to systematize lexical materials on the topic;

  •          to practice the active vocabulary of the topic;
  •          to develop speaking, reading, writing and listening skills through various activities;
  •          to present new grammar;
  •          to develop students’ thinking, memory, imagination, attention and creativeness.

Aids:   multimedia presentation, cards, instructions, pictures on the topic “Sport”, a tape recorder, an audio-cassette, a textbook Alla Nesvit “We learn English 6”

PROCEDURE

I. 1.Greetings.

   T: Good morning, dear children. How are you today? I see you are in a good mood, full of energy and ready for the lesson. Are you ready to speak English? How are you today?

2. Warming up

   T: For the start, I would like you to write the old Latin saying. Your tasks are:

  • to write down the proverb;
  • to translate it;
  • to write on a small stickers your associations about this proverb, only a few words;

A sound mind in a sound body.

(У здоровому тілі – здоровий дух.)

Possible answers:

S1: I agree with this proverb. I think, everyone must do all he can to be healthy.

S2: To my mind, physically inactive people get old earlier than those who have plenty of exercises.

T: You are right. I can add that being in good health means having both body and mind in good working order free from disease and pain. So, what is the topic of our lesson?

S3: The topic of the lesson is “ Popular sports”.

T: Right you are. So we continue to study this topic. Today we will talk about different kinds of sport. You will develop your listening, reading, speaking and grammar skills through various creative activities.

3. Checking the homework.

T: Your home assignment was to write and learn a few sentences about different kinds of sport. What do you know about them?

ІІ. Main part

1. Vocabulary practice. T: You know many kinds of sports. Group these activities into winter and summer sports.( Slide 2, 3)

Words: volleyball, horse – racing, baseball, tennis, skating, figure skating, basketball, skiing, wrestling, ice – hockey, skateboarding.

Key:

winter sports: figure skating, skiing, ice hockey, skating, skate boarding;

summer sports: volleyball, baseball, basketball, wrestling, horse – racing, tennis.

T: Look at the screen. Which are team sports, which are individual sports?

Words: volleyball, hockey, jumping, baseball, cricket, gymnastics, running, skiing, basketball, cycling, football, athletics.

Key:

team sports: volleyball, cricket, basketball, football, hockey, baseball;

individual sports: jumping, running, gymnastics, skiing, cycling, athletics.

T: What competitions in pairs do you know?

Possible answers: boxing, table tennis, badminton, chess, wrestling, judo, karate.

2. Listening and reading

T: Now we can watch a short story about sport..You should listen attentively and be careful. Memorize the main idea.

T: Let’s do some exercises to the video. The first you should divide into 3 groups and write correct answers. Next you should  write the word under the pictures. Match the days of the week and the activities. T: Who’ll do all tasks you should raise your hands.

Ex. 1. What’s the word?  BMX              biking            rock       climbing        rafting       caving       surfing parachuting        bat       scared        bungee jump        catch

Ex.2. Match the days of the week and the activities.

3. Grammar practice and writing

3.1 When do we use…? T: We have 3 verbs. You should know how correctly to use them with different kinds of sport!( Slide 4,5,6)

GO – if you speak about sport ending in –ing.

          (e.g. I go swimming.)

PLAY – if you speak about ball games (or chess).

          (e.g. I play football.)

DO – if you speak about other sports.

         (e.g. I do athletics.)

3.2 What sport can we… T: So when we use do, play, go? Let’s write it down.

DO?                                       aerobics                                  gymnastics

                                                   judo                                        swimming

                                                   football                                   athletics

                                                   tennis                                     basketball

3.3 Check yourself

GO – skating, swimming;

PLAY – ice – hockey, tennis, football, handball, basketball;

DO – aerobics, judo, karate, gymnastics, athletics.

3.4 T: Complete the sentences using do, play, or go. Ex. 1, p. 44.

1. Every morning I _________ jogging.

2. On Saturday mornings my brothers ________ football.

3. I _______ gymnastics on Saturdays.

4. My mother and I ___________ aerobics every week.

5. My father and mother _________ golf at the weekend.

6. In winter we ________ skiing.

7. In summer we ________ tennis and ________ swimming.

 

4. Game “ Guess the word”

T: Listen and try to guess what sport I’m  talking about.

a) It is one of the oldest and the most popular sport in the world, the Americans called it soccer. It is an exciting game for real men. There are eleven players in each team. They are big, fast and really strong. (Football)

b) It is an individual sport both for boys and girls. First it was popular only among the boys but now more and more girls take part in it. It helps to become strong, confident and you are always ready to defend yourself and other people. It is very important. Some people say that it is a fight and it is not good for girls but I can't agree with them. (Karate)

  1.                  It is a team game. Both men and women can play it. The players have a ball. They play the ball with their hands. There are six players in every team. (Volleyball)
  2.                 This game is played everywhere – in Ukraine and in other countries too. It was first played in the USA. Each of the two teams has five players. They bounce the ball on the floor up and down with one hand. They try to throw the ball into the basket. (Basketball)

5. Game “ Spider web” Let’s play the game “Spider web”. Do the circle and say about your favorite kind of sport. Throw the ball of thread to your classmate and hold the ball until everyone says about themselves. After that you should untwine this ball and say about your neighbors’ favorite kind of sport. Listen attentively and be quick! 

6. True\False Game

 T: So continue our playing. I will say short sentences. Repeat the sentence if it`s true for you, but say nothing, if it`s false.

  • I do my morning exercises every day.
  • Sport isn`t popular in Ukraine.
  • We go in for sports.
  • Sport is very important in our life.
  • I don`t like swimming.
  • We have a swimming pool in our school.
  • We want to be champions.
  • I take part in sport competitions.

7. Group work

T: I need one volunteer. You should pick one piece of paper and don’t read it. Only ask questions. The others say yes or no. I’ll be the first! These questions will help you.( Slide 7)

  • Is it a team sport/game?
  • Do we use a ball?
  • Do we compete with the others?
  • Is it a water sport?
  • Is it… (swimming)?

III. Conclusion

  1. Summarizing T: It is time to finish our lesson. You were hardworking. And I hope that all of you will go in for sports to be the winners. What have you learnt at today's lesson? What can you do now?

S1: I can recognize different kinds of sports.

S2: I can speak about my favourite kind of sports.

  1. Homework
