IX. Discussion.

Teacher:  You have watched the film, discussed urgent problems of the planet, read

the text and now I would like you to answer some questions “.

  • What should we, people, do to help our planet survive?
  • We should follow the law of three Rs, that is REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE.
  • What do they mean?
  • Reduce means to make less.
  • Reuse means to use again.
  • Recycle means to use rubbish to make new things.
  • What can you reduce/reuse/recycle?
  • What things can we change in order to help our planet?

P1: We have to use less plastic bags and make bags from natural material,

environmentally-friendly ones and reuse them several times.

P2: We should reduce the use of water, electricity and gas.

P3: We should throw out rubbish into different rubbish bins (containers) for recycling

in order to make new things.

P4: We must promote education about environment by creating programmes for

students of all ages. People must be more aware of environmental issues.

P5: We can ride bikes and go on foot instead of driving a car if we have to do

shopping in a corner shop.

P6: We have to plant trees and bushes. Create parks for endangered animals and appreciate the beauty of nature around us.

P7: The Earth is our mutual Home, a big green house. All its inhabitants- people,

animals, birds -need to live in peace and harmony.

XI.

Teacher: “In conclusion, I can say that we, people, must help our planet to survive because we depend on it and should do our best to save it”.

A great English writer John Galsworthy said: “If you don’t think about the Future, you will not have it”. Everybody must realize that our future depends on you, me and all people living around.

X.

Teacher: You have done well today and you have got excellent marks. Now open your daybooks and write down your home task.

Your home task is to write an essay “What can you do to save the Earth? ”

Додаток 1 (Текст для читання)

Rainforests - the lungs of the planet

What can you do in a second? Well, according to statistics, you can make a section of the rainforest the size of a football field disappear. It is exactly how fast we are destroying the world's rainforests. It is clear that there is cause for alarm.

Rainforests are the very warm, dense, wet forests that exist along the equator throughout South and Central America, Africa, South East Asia and Australia. Although they cover about 7% of the Earth's surface, they are home to 50% of the Earth's plants and trees. This rich vegetation plays a major role in cleaning our air by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen which we need to survive. At least 3,000 different types of fruit also grow in the rainforests. Of these, only 200 are now consumed in the Western world. In addition, rainforest plants are rich in alkaloids which are crucial for curing numerous illnesses and diseases. Many of these plants can't be found anywhere else in the world. These dense forests are also home to an incredible number of insects, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals.

Unfortunately, people are cutting down trees for timber or to make grazing land for cattle. Experts estimate that we are losing 137 plant, animal and insect species each day because of deforestation.

If we don't take action soon, nearly half of the world's species of plants and animals will disappear over the next quarter of a century. Fewer rainforests means less oxygen for us to breathe and more carbon dioxide which will only increase global warming.
