Артиклі в англійській мові. Правила вживання

Артикль а вживається перед словами, які починаються з приголосного: :  a man.

Артикль an вживається перед словами, які починаються з голосного: an elephant.

Але! a union [ә `ju:njәn] – an umbrella [әn  Λm`brelә], a hunter [ә `hΛntә] – an hour [әn `auә]

У значенні «один з», «будь-який», «кожний»

При згадці чого-небудь вперше

Перед назвами професій або посад

He is a doctor.

Але! У певних дієслівних структурах, коли іменники в них втрачають своє загальне значення, артикль з не вживається: be  appointed/ elected/ chosen/ named; be son/daughter/nurse/,etc.) to smb, work/act/go/be engaged/serve + as + іменник:                 He was appointed director.

У значенні числівника «один» з іменниками, які позначають час, відстань, вагу та перед числівниками dozen, hundred, thousand, million

He will be back in a minute.

There was about a thousand flowers there.

Перед іменниками з описовими прикметниками

The book is on a little table.

В уточнюючому звороті, коли не підкреслюється відомість особи, про яку розповідається

Mary Thompson, a student of the university, spoke at the meeting.

Перед незлічувальними іменниками, якщо вони позначають сорт, різновид або порцію чогось

Bring us a tea and two coffees.

Перед іменниками, які позначають емоції та розумову діяльність, якщо їх значення уточнюється або обмежується

She passed on a love of music to her children.

My parents wanted me to have a good education.

В структурах: There is (was /will be) a …; She/He has a …; This/ That is a …

There is a cat on the sofa.

У словосполученнях з дієсловами to have, to give, to take

have a good time, have a bath, have a mind to do smth, have a cold, have a great fun, gave a hand, give a lift, take a shower, take a seat     Але! have fun

Перед злічувальними іменниками в однині з словами such, quite, rather, what

He is quite a young man.

Перед власними назвами й національностями у певних випадках

a Mr Curtis (якийсь), a Ford (марка, продукт компанії), a Repin (витвір мистецтва), a Japanise, a Dutchman (окрема людина)

Jack had a heart attack. He is in hospital now (як паціент)

He has gone to sea (як моряк)

Але! We went to the church to take a photo. (на екскурсію)

Jack’s daughter is at the hospital (як відвідувач)

У певних дієслівних структурах, коли іменники в них втрачають своє загальне значення: -be son/daughter/nurse/,etc.) to smb

Назви країн, до складу яких входять слова republic, union, kingdom, states, та ті, які стоять в множині 

the United States (of America), the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands, the Philippines

Назви театрів, музеїв, картинних галерей, концертных залів, кінотеатрів, клубів, готелів, ресторанів, банків, загальних будівель, визначних місць, але деякі назви вживаються без the традиційно

Fifth Avenue, Piccadilly Circus, Red Square, Broadway, Victoria Station, Scotalnd Yard, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park

Але! the Strand, the High Street, the Mall, the White House, the Royal Palace, the Golden Gate Bridge, the London underground

!!! Немає певного правила щодо назв районів міста: Manhattan, the Bronx, Mayfair, the West End

Назви університетів й коледжів

Harward University, Oxford University

Але! the University of  Taras Shevchenko

Назви магазинів, ресторанів, банків, готелів, що названі на честь людей, які їх відкрили (вони закінчуються на 's чи s)
