Students will be able to

- distinguish pets among other animals;

- guess an animal from a mime game;

- speak and write about their (or their friends') pets (names of pets, the question "Have you got a…?" and the answers "Yes, I have"/"No, I haven’t");

- count pets (from 1 to 20).

- discover things they have in common with the classmates (the same pets).

Topic: Friends

Subtopic: Pets and Possessions

Lengths:  40 minutes

Group size:  14 pupils

Structures:"Do you have any …?", " I have a….."/ I haven’t…."

  • Target Vocabulary: pets, a dog, a cat , a rabbit, a fish, a mouse, a bird,  a turtle, a spider, a snake, numbers 1-20.

Lesson Materials: pets flashcards, puppets,- cards with numbers 1-20, worksheets (favourite pet class survey, pictures with different amount of animals).

Lesson Procedure:

Warm Up: Mime game "Guess the animals"

Draw a picture on the board of a house, put a person there (family members magnets (previous topic)) and the pet (a cat). Point to the person and say "This is ….". Then point to the house and the animal and say "This is his/her house", "This is his/her pet cat, Murchyk" (for example). Add more animals magnets to the picture (e.g. a cat, a rabbit) to get the idea across. The point of this is to make clear that pets are animals we have at home (and not on the farm, in the zoo, in wild nature etc.).

Vocabulary (p.42). Track 50 (play the CD). Use (hand- and finger) puppets.

Sing the song I have a pet  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWepfJ-8XU0

Dialogue (p.42, track 51). Describing pictures, listening, reading, acting it out using animal puppets.

Ask students "Have you got a pet (dog)?"? and elicit "Yes, I have / No, I haven't". If a student says yes, ask what their pet's name is.

Review numbers 1-20.

- do the physical exercise Count to 20 with Jack Hartmann https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAZ7UJweYZ8&t=31s

- name the pets on the pictures and count them.

Watching  the video Animal story Steve and Maggie

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0_wYxOvPKk&t=200s

Ss watch, listen and tick the pictures of animals in the pet shop.  Then they circle the picture of the Steve's new pet. For the FB, first, I have ss check their answers with their partners and finally I choose one of the ss to play the role of the teacher and check the answers. Next, I give out the other photocopies " Favourite Pet Class Survey" and have Ss fill in the blanks.  Get everyone to mingle and ask as many students as they can about their favourite pets. For FB, I divide the board into 4 parts and have one student from each group come to the board to write their answers.

Writing

SS write in their workbooks if  the child has got or has not got a particular pet.

Quiz on Kahoot.it "What is it?"

What went well? Why?

Students liked all the activities, especially role plays with animal puppets

What didn’t go well? Why?

Students were counting animals too slow. They have just started leaning numbers at the previous lesson.

 What would you do differently next time?

I would allow students to play with animal puppets more next time and now I understand that my students need more practice on counting from 11 to 20.
