Lesson Stages

Stage 1: Warm-Up (5 minutes)

Objective: To engage students and introduce the topic of Easter.
Activity:

  • Start with a quick discussion: “What do you know about Easter? How do you celebrate it in Ukraine?”
  • Show a colorful Easter image (e.g., a basket with dyed eggs) and elicit related words (e.g., eggs, bunny, spring). Introduce 2–3 target words: Easter egg hunt, hot cross buns, resurrection.
  • Announce: “Today we’ll go on an Easter quest to learn how Easter is celebrated in the UK, USA, and Ukraine!”
Rationale: This stage activates prior knowledge, sets the festive context, and introduces key vocabulary.

Stage 2: Vocabulary Introduction and Video (10 minutes)

Objective: To introduce new vocabulary and learn about Easter traditions in the UK and USA through a video.
Activity:

  1. Pre-teach vocabulary: Write 5 key words on the board (Easter egg hunt, egg rolling, hot cross buns, Easter Bunny, bonnet) and explain their meanings with visuals. E.g., “An Easter egg hunt is a game where children search for hidden eggs.”
  2. Watch the video: Show the National Geographic video “Easter Traditions Around the World” (3:45 min). Before watching, give a task: “Write down 2 traditions you see in the UK and 2 in the USA.”
    • UK: Egg rolling (children roll eggs down a hill), eating hot cross buns.
    • USA: Easter egg hunts, Easter bonnet parades (children wear decorated hats).
  3. Discuss: In pairs, students share what they learned. Elicit answers: “What did you find interesting? Have you ever tried egg rolling?”
Rationale: The video provides authentic input, introduces unique traditions, and helps students connect new vocabulary to real-life contexts.

Stage 3: Reading and Vocabulary Practice (10 minutes)

Objective: To compare Easter traditions in the UK, USA, and Ukraine through a reading task and practice new vocabulary.
Activity:

  • Handout with texts: Divide students into 3 teams (e.g., Team UK, Team USA, Team Ukraine). Each team gets a short text about Easter traditions in their assigned country:
    • UK: “In the UK, Easter is a time for family and fun. On Good Friday, people eat hot cross buns – sweet rolls with a cross on top, symbolizing the crucifixion. On Easter Sunday, children take part in egg rolling, a game where they roll hard-boiled eggs down a hill. The egg that rolls the farthest wins!”
    • USA: “In the USA, Easter is colorful and festive. Children believe in the Easter Bunny, who hides eggs for them to find in an Easter egg hunt. Many kids also join Easter bonnet parades, wearing hats decorated with flowers and ribbons. Families dye eggs in bright colors and share a big meal with ham or lamb.”
    • Ukraine: “In Ukraine, Easter is a spiritual holiday. Families attend a dawn service to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. They bless baskets with traditional foods like paska (Easter bread) and painted eggs called pysanky. On Easter Monday, people often play games like pouring water on each other, symbolizing cleansing.”
  • Task: Each team reads their text and answers 3 questions:
    1. What is one unique tradition in your country?
    2. What food is mentioned?
    3. What does this tradition symbolize?
  • Vocabulary practice: Students underline 3 new words in their text (e.g., symbolize, dye, bless) and guess their meanings from context. Then, they share their answers with the class.
Rationale: Reading provides detailed information about traditions, encourages teamwork, and helps students practice new vocabulary in context.

Stage 4: Easter Egg Hunt Quest (15 minutes)

Objective: To engage students in a fun quest, practice speaking, and compare traditions through tasks.
Activity:

  • Setup: Before the lesson, hide plastic Easter eggs around the classroom (3 eggs per team, 9 eggs total). Each egg contains a task card with a question or activity related to Easter traditions.
  • Teams: Students stay in their 3 teams (Team UK, Team USA, Team Ukraine). Each team takes turns going on an Easter egg hunt to find their 3 eggs.
  • Task Cards Examples:
    1. Speaking: “Describe an Easter egg hunt in the USA. Would you like to try it? Why?”
    2. Comparison: “How is egg rolling in the UK different from Ukrainian traditions? Use 2 new words.”
    3. Role-play: “Act out a scene where you’re at a dawn service in Ukraine, blessing a basket.”
  • Execution: Teams take turns hunting for eggs (5 minutes per team). After finding an egg, they complete the task as a group and present their answers to the class. The teacher awards points for creativity and correct use of vocabulary.
Rationale: The egg hunt makes the lesson interactive and exciting, encouraging teamwork and speaking practice. Tasks reinforce the comparison of traditions and use of new vocabulary.

Stage 5: Production Task – Cooking and Video (20 minutes)

Objective: To use new vocabulary in a real-life context by preparing a British Easter dish and recording a video.
Activity:

  • Task: Each team prepares a simple version of hot cross buns (a traditional British Easter treat). The dough is pre-made to save time, and students add raisins and draw crosses with icing.
  • Instructions:
    1. The teacher provides ingredients: pre-made dough, raisins, icing.
    2. Each team shapes their buns, adds raisins, and bakes them (or pretends to bake if no oven is available). They then draw crosses with icing.
    3. While preparing, students narrate their process in English, using new vocabulary: “We’re baking hot cross buns, a traditional British treat. They symbolize the crucifixion. We’re decorating them with a cross.”
    4. Teams record a 1–2 minute video of their cooking process, explaining what they’re doing and why hot cross buns are special for Easter in the UK.
    5. At the end, teams share their buns with each other, tasting and giving feedback: “Your buns are so festive!”
Rationale: This task integrates speaking, collaboration, and cultural learning. Preparing a dish makes the lesson hands-on and memorable, while the video encourages real-life use of English.

Alternative Production Task (if cooking is not possible)

Objective: To compare Easter traditions through a collaborative writing task.
Activity:

  • Task: Each team creates a comparison chart of Easter traditions in the UK, USA, and Ukraine, focusing on similarities and differences.
  • Instructions:
    1. Teams discuss: “What’s similar about Easter in these countries? What’s different?”
    2. They create a chart with 3 columns (UK, USA, Ukraine) and write 2 similarities (e.g., “All countries celebrate the resurrection”) and 3 differences (e.g., “In the UK, they roll eggs, but in Ukraine, they bless baskets”).
    3. Teams present their charts to the class, using new vocabulary: “In the USA, Easter is colorful with bonnet parades, which is unique.”
Rationale: This task encourages critical thinking, writing, and speaking skills, while reinforcing cultural comparison and vocabulary use.

Stage 6: Reflection (5 minutes)

Objective: To reflect on learning and share experiences.
Activity:

  • Ask: “What new tradition did you find most interesting? What new words did you learn? Did you enjoy the quest?”
  • Students share their thoughts: “I loved the Easter egg hunt! I learned the word ‘bonnet’.”
Rationale: Reflection helps students consolidate their learning and gives the teacher feedback.

Homework (Optional)

Write a short paragraph (5–6 sentences) about your favorite Easter tradition (from the UK, USA, or Ukraine), using at least 3 new words. Example: “I love the Easter egg hunt in the USA because it’s so festive. Children dye eggs and hide them in the garden. It’s a joyful tradition!”
