Good morning, everyone. How are you today?

Today we will explore one of the most famous parts of British culture: the English breakfast. You will learn what people used to eat in Britain many years ago, what a traditional English breakfast looks like, and how modern breakfasts in the UK have changed. We will watch, listen, speak, and work in groups.

2. Warm-up “What do you eat for breakfast?”

Now, I will ask you either scan a code or go to menti.com, enter a code (on the blackboard) and write three words:

British breakfasts are quite different from what many of us eat. Let’s take a look at them.

3. Role-play: “English breakfast”

Scene 1: The Traditional English Breakfast

Characters: Mum, Dad, Emily, Tom

Mum: Good morning! Breakfast is ready!

Tom: Wow! What’s on the table today, Mum?

Mum: Today we’re having a traditional English breakfast! Look — bacon, sausages, eggs,

baked beans, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, and toast!

Emily: That looks huge! Do people really eat all this in the morning?

Dad: Yes, in the past it was normal. Farmers needed lots of energy to work in the fields.

Tom: And what do people drink?

Mum: Of course — a cup of strong English tea with milk!

All together: Yummy! Let’s eat!

Customer 1: I like that. Still British, but in a modern way!

9. Story Quest: “Emily’s Breakfast Mystery”

Teacher:

You are great chefs! I hope you are great authors too. I have a story about Emily but it is divided into parts. To get each part of the story you have to do the task which is on the cards.

Card 1

If you want to get parts of the text, take 6 photos and show them to the teacher:

1. A photo of the red vegetable

2. A photo of the crispy part of breakfast

3. A photo of a traditional English drink

4. A photo of a sunny side up part of the English breakfast

5. A photo of a kind of breakfast bread

6. A photo of a product which has a cap and it grows in the forest

Then order the parts of the text and shout “ENGLISH BREAKFAST”.

The story

Fragment A

It was seven o’clock on a foggy London morning when 13-year-old Emily Green came down to the kitchen. Today was special: her class was having a “Build Your Own English Breakfast” competition.

Fragment B

She opened the fridge and gasped. The sausages were missing. Only a note was left: “If you want your breakfast back, follow the clues.”

Fragment C

Clue #1 said: “Look where the bread becomes gold.” Emily ran to the toaster and found another note: “Eggs know the way.”

Fragment D

In the egg box she found the next clue: “Find something round, juicy, and red.” She looked behind the tomato basket and found Clue #3: “Your final clue is sizzling.”

Fragment E

She heard a sizzling sound in the garden. Emily ran outside and found Max cooking her sausages on a small camping stove. “Surprise!” he said. “I’m helping you win!”

Fragment F

Emily brought everything to school. The teacher tasted her plate and said it was the best English breakfast of the day. Emily won the competition — with Max’s help.
