Topic: The Environment. Plants and Animals. Ecological Problems of our Planet. Chernobyl

Text For Listening

Our planet Earth is facing many serious ecological problems today. People pollute the air, water and soil every day. Factories and cars produce harmful gases that cause air pollution and climate change. Rivers, lakes and seas are often polluted with plastic, chemicals and rubbish. As a result, many plants and animals are disappearing.

Forests are very important for life on Earth because they produce oxygen and protect animals. However, people cut down thousands of trees every year. This process is called deforestation. It destroys the homes of wild animals and changes the climate of our planet.

Many rare animals are now endangered. Tigers, pandas, elephants and some species of birds are becoming extinct because people hunt them or destroy their natural habitats. Scientists and экологісти work hard to protect wildlife and create national parks and nature reserves.

People around the world are trying to solve environmental problems. They recycle   paper, glass and plastic, save water and electricity, and use public transport more often. Many schools organize ecological projects and clean-up days to teach children how to protect nature.

One of the greatest ecological disasters in history happened in Ukraine in 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. There was a terrible explosion at the fourth reactor. A lot of radioactive material entered the air and polluted large territories of Ukraine, Belarus and other countries.

Thousands of people had to leave their homes forever. Many firefighters and workers risked their lives to stop the disaster. Some of them died because of radiation. The city of Pripyat became empty after the accident.

Today the Chernobyl zone is still dangerous in some places, but nature has slowly returned there. Scientists continue studying the effects of radiation on people, animals and plants. The tragedy of Chernobyl reminds us that people must use technology carefully and protect our planet for future generations.
