LESSON PLAN

  1.             Organization part (10 m.)
  1. Check the presence of the pupils. One of the students is writing the date on the whiteboard.

-Who is absent today? (Name), please, write the date on the whiteboard!

  1. Warming-up:

-Good morning, students! How are you today? Do you have a busy week? Imagine that you have one week holiday. What would you do? What place would you choose for relaxing?

  1. Сhecking of homework

-What is your homework for today? (To learn new words from the book Wider World, p. 75-76 [1]; to choose one kind of illness and describe the symptoms).

Photo 1. Words from pp.75-76 SB

  1.           Pupils work in pairs. One of them names some illness from the list for homework and another one describes the symptoms and methods of treatment. Pairs are chosen by the teacher.

For example:

Rostyk: Flu.

Stepan: headache, sore throat, high temperature, sneezing, cough, body hurts. You should make an appointment with the doctor, stay in bed and drink a lot of tea and take tablets.

  1.           Memory training activity. Several students have to name all the illnesses mentioned today and a classmate who named a certain illness.
  1.             The main part of the lesson (30 m.)
  1. Informing the students about the topic and purpose of the lesson.

-Look at the whiteboard. Today we continue our topic about health and illnesses, check your knowledge about Past Simple and Past Continuous. We will add new phrases to your health vocabulary and revise the usage of past tenses.

  1. Developing of listening and reading skills.
    1.           Pre-listening stage. Introduction of new lexical units.

-Video watching (1:26 – 2:42) [3]. In this part of the video students have the possibility to see complicated phrases from the main part of the video and some definitions to them. They are listening to the definitions and trying to pick the Ukrainian equivalent to these words. All the phrases should be written down in their exercise books.

Phrases:

*to feel hot – to feel ill,

*feverish – suffering from a very high temperature,

*to examine – look at one`s body to check that he or she is healthy,

*sore – painful because of infection,

*chest – the front part of your body between neck and stomach,

*breath – the air that send out of your lungs,

*to take one`s temperature – measure temperature of the body,

*tongue – the soft part inside your mouth,

*prescription – a piece of paper on which a doctor writes a medicine for a sick person).

  1.           While-listening stage.

Pupils get a sheet of paper, which has the text from the video but with some gaps. The first time - pupils just watch the video, the second time - they fill the gaps (0:11 – 1:20) [3].

Photo 2. Text for listening part [3]

  1.           Post-listening part.

-Checking of the task (pupils take turns in reading their options for every gap).

-Checking of the knowledge of the previously learned topic (Past Simple and Continuous tenses): What tenses are used in this dialogue?

-Finally, analyze the unknown phrases from the pre-listening stage one more time. Asking any student to translate any word.

  1. Developing of speaking skills. Students share their opinion, using new lexical items.

-Do you think that to be healthy is expensive today?

-When was the last time when you were ill?

-What do you usually do when you feel pain or when you are ill? Do you take pills?

  1. Grammar revision.
    1.           Revision of the rules. Preparation to the practical part.

Work is based on Student`s book Wider World.

Give students the following questions about Past Simple and Continuous:

- How do we build Past Continuous? When do we use Past Continuous? What is the difference between Past Simple and Past Continuous? If you see for two hours in a sentence, will you put Past Simple? Marko, make up one sentence using Past Simple together with Past Continuous.

  1.
Practical part. Exercises from Workbook [2]. Exercise 2 and 4 at the page 70. Sentences from exercise 2 students should write on the whiteboard.

                                                     Photo 3. Ex. 2 and 4 p. 70 WB

  1. The final part of the lesson (5 m.)
  1. Homework for the next time:

Task 1. Translate the dialogue from today`s video between the doctor and the patient, learn unknown phrases.

Task 2. Write a text about your last visit to the doctor. You should follow such recommendations:

-The usage of Past Simple and Continuous is necessary.

-Minimum 10 new words.

-In your text I should find the answer to the following questions: When was the last time you visited a doctor? What illness? What symptoms? What treatment? How long were you ill? Did the doctor examine you? (If yes, then what parts of your body? Revise the vocabulary about parts of body).

2. Summary of the lesson. Marks. Impressions of students.

What did we revise and learn today?

What did you like the most?
