Вітаю, юні вартові! Сьогодні ми не просто у класі — ми відкриваємо портал у XIII століття! Але щоб брама міста відчинилася, нам потрібен секретний цифровий код.

ENGLISH TEACHER:

Hello, brave Guardians! To open the city gate, you must solve a royal maths puzzle in English. Ready? One thousand PLUS two hundred PLUS fifty PLUS six. What is the year? (Students answer: Twelve fifty-six!) Perfect — 1256! Welcome... to the Year of the Golden Lion!

1	Lviv was founded in 1256 AD — that makes it over 770 years old! For comparison, the Eiffel Tower in Paris was built in 1889 — Lviv is more than 600 years older.
2	Lviv is the 7th largest city in Ukraine today, with a population of approximately 720,000 people (2023 estimate).
3	The city has had many names: Lemberg (German/Austrian), Lwów (Polish), Leopolis (Latin). 'Leopolis' literally means 'Lion City' in Latin.

THE KING AND THE PRINCE — Король і Принц

Вчитель ІСТОРІЇ:

Король Данило Романович Галицький — один із найвидатніших правителів середньовічної України. Він заснував Галицько-Волинське князівство та отримав титул короля від Папи Римського Інокентія IV у 1253 році — лише за три роки до заснування Львова. Йому наснився Золотий Лев, що охороняв Карпатські гори. Данило побудував місто-фортецю і назвав його на честь сина — Лева.

ENGLISH TEACHER:

Now let's meet the Royal Family! Repeat after me with a royal voice: KING — Danylo the Great. PRINCE — Lev the Lion. CITY — Lviv, the Lion's City! Great! Who gave the city its name? (Students: Prince Lev!) Correct — and what does LEV mean in Ukrainian? (Students: Lion!) Excellent — so Lviv literally means 'Lion's City'!

MARKET SQUARE — Площа Ринок: Детективи та Боги

Площа Ринок — ренесансне серце Львова і один із найкрасивіших середньовічних ринків Центрально-Східної Європи. Площа має розміри 142 на 129 метрів. За середньовічним законом, кожен будинок міг мати лише 3 вікна на фасаді — більше означало вищий податок. На чотирьох кутах стоять статуї богів: Нептун (тризуб), Діана (лук і собаки), Амфітрита (дельфін) та Адоніс (вепр).

MY GUARDIAN LION — Мій Лев-охоронець

Вчитель ІСТОРІЇ:

Лев — символ Львова і символ мужності, сили та захисту. В місті налічується понад 4500 скульптурних левів на будинках, брамах, фонтанах і навіть дверних ручках! Деякі леви мають два тіла і одну голову (геральдичний лев-бікорпус), деякі сплять, деякі грізно гарчать. Лев присутній на гербі міста: золотий лев, що піднімається по синій брамі. Символіка кольорів: синій та золотий — кольори України та Галичини.

ENGLISH TEACHER:

Lviv has 4,500 lions! Can you believe it? Some lions have TWO bodies and ONE head — that is the heraldic bicorporate lion, symbol of Galicia! Now you will design your OWN school guardian lion. Use the Lion Design Card. My lion is (colour). It has (wings / a crown / a shield). It guards (our school / Ukraine / knowledge). It likes (history / English / coffee!). You have 5 minutes — GO!

DID YOU KNOW? — Цікаві факти:

1	The bicorporate lion (two bodies, one head) is an ancient heraldic symbol. In Lviv it appears on the Italian Courtyard (Italiysky Dvoryk), built 1580-1600, which is considered the finest example of Renaissance architecture in Ukraine.
2	The lion on Lviv's coat of arms is shown in the position called 'rampant' in heraldic language — standing on its hind legs with front paws raised, which symbolises courage and readiness to defend.
3	Lions are not native to Ukraine or Europe — they were exotic, powerful animals seen only in royal menageries or described in travellers' tales. This made them the ultimate symbol of power and majesty.
4	The Lviv lion gate on Halytska Street features a lion with golden eyes and open jaw. Local legend says that if you touch the lion's paw and make a wish, it will come true — but only if you whisper in Ukrainian!

3.	Extension question: 'Why do you think people chose a LION as their city symbol and NOT a bear, eagle, or wolf?' Discuss in pairs for 1 minute.

Ви розгадали всі таємниці міста Лева. Ви дізналися про короля Данила, принца Лева, богів Площі Ринок, Юрія Кульчицького та тисячі кам'яних левів. Тепер ви офіційно стаєте Охоронцями Львова — хранителями його пам'яті, мови та культури!

ENGLISH TEACHER:

You have passed all the tests. You found the Gods. You drew your Lion! Today you showed COURAGE — the most important quality of a Guardian. In English, we have a special phrase: 'You have the heart of a lion!' It means you are BRAVE. Repeat: I HAVE THE HEART OF A LION!

Now please come forward to receive your certificates.

DID YOU KNOW? — Цікаві факти:

1	The phrase 'heart of a lion' (or 'lion-hearted') is a famous English expression for bravery. The most famous example is King Richard I of England, called 'Richard the Lionheart' (1157-1199), who was a crusading king known for extraordinary courage.
2	Since 2022, Lviv has become even more important as a cultural stronghold and refuge, receiving hundreds of thousands of internally displaced Ukrainians. The city has 8 UNESCO World Heritage sites within its historic centre.

3.	Exit ticket: Students write ONE English word they remember from today on a sticky note and place it on the class 'Wall of Lions'.
4.	Homework option: 'Find ONE lion sculpture in Lviv (or online) and write 2 sentences about it in English for next class.'
