The Mother Hen   Look, Father Rooster, how nice our little son is! Son, my dear, say “How do you do ” to your father! 

The Silly Chicken   “How do you do, daddy!”

The Father Rooster   How clever our son is! You are strong! You can do everything!

The Mother Hen   Now I must go and get some crumbs and seeds for you, my dear little boy!

The Father Rooster   And I must go and cry cock-a-doodle-doo.

The Mother Hen   My dear son, you may play here in the yard!

The Silly Chicken   Yes, mummy! Good-bye, daddy!

( The rooster and the hen go away)

The Silly Chicken   I am clever, I am strong, I can do everything!                                   (The frog jumps up to him)

The Frog    I’m a frog so green and small,

                  I hop around the garden wall,

                  I croak a tune in morning’s fog,

                  Hello, my friend — I’m just a frog!

The Frog   Croak, croak! Hello, Chicken!

The Silly Chicken   Hello, Frog! Look at me! I am clever, I am strong, I can do everything! 

Mummy says so, daddy say so!

The Frog   Can you hop? Look!   (The frog jumps up to him)

The Silly Chicken  Of course I can! I can do everything! Mummy and daddy say so! (The chicken begins to hop and falls down and cries ) The Silly Chicken   Mummy! Mummy! Oh, my leg!

The Mother Hen  I am here! Oh, my poor little chicken! 

(The hen bandages his leg)  My poor little little darling! (The hen goes away)           (The cat  runs up to him)

The Cat (sings)    I am a cat with whiskers bright,

                              I prowl the rooftops every night,

                              I chase the sun across the floor,

                               Then nap again — that’s what I am for. 

The Cat   Miaow! Hello, Chicken! Are you ill? 

The Silly Chicken   Hello, Cat! I am not ill. I am clever, I am strong, I can do everything!

Mummy and daddy say so!

The Cat   And can you say “Miaow!”?

The Silly Chicken   I can do everything! Listen: peep, peep, peep! 

The Cat  But that is not “Miaow!” It is “peep, peep”! And can you catch a mouse? The Silly Chicken   Oh, yes, I can! I can do everything! (The mouse jumps up to him)

The Mouse              I am a mouse so small and quick,

                                 I scurry past both stone and stick,                                  I nibble crumbs behind the house,                                  A tiny whiskered, quiet mouse.

The Mouse   Hello, hello, Chicken! Can you catch me!? Chicken, catch me! (The mouse runs around the chicken. The chicken is dizzy)

The Silly Chicken   Mummy! Mummy! Come here! Oh, my head!

The Mother Hen   Oh, my dear! I am here! Oh, my poor little chicken! Don’t cry. (The hen goes back, the dog enters)

The Dog: I am a dog with happy tail,

                 I race the wind along the trail,                 I bark with joy, I leap and jog,                  A loyal friend — I am a dog.

The Dog: Hello, Chicken! So you can do everything?

The Silly Chicken: Yes! I can do everything!

The Dog: But can you run as fast as I can? Can you catch me?

The Silly Chicken   Oh, yes, I can! I can!

(The dog starts running fast, the silly chicken trips and falls) (The frog, the cat, the dog and the mouse come up to the chicken) The Frog   I don’t think he is clever.

The Mouse   I don’t think he is strong.

The Dog: I don’t think he is fast.

The Cat   What can he do? He can do nothing!

The Silly Chicken   But I am clever, I am strong, I can do everything! Mummy and daddy say so!

The Frog   But it is not true!

The Cat   No, it is not true!

The Mouse   You must learn and learn.

The Frog   Then you will be clever.

The Cat   Then you will be strong.

The Dog   Then you will be able to do everything!

The Frog, the Cat, the Mouse, the Dog   But now you are only a silly little chicken. 

The Silly Chicken            I am a silly little chicken,

                                           I dance around without a care,

                                           I flap my wings and keep on kickin’,                                            Spreading giggles everywhere.
