The education system in the United Kingdom consists of four main parts: primary education, secondary education, further education, and higher education. Schooling is compulsory for children between the ages of 5 and 16. After completing secondary school, students can choose to attend college or sixth form before entering university.
In the United States, education is also divided into several levels: elementary school, middle school, high school, and higher education. American students usually start school at the age of 6 and finish high school by 18. After that, they can continue their studies in college or university. Both countries value education as a key to personal and social development, but the structure and approach may differ.
New Vocabulary:
• primary education – початкова освіта
• secondary education – середня освіта
• higher education – вища освіта
• compulsory – обов’язковий
• to attend – відвідувати
• college – коледж
• university – університет
• development – розвиток
Listening Task (Аудіювання):
Education plays a very important role in both the UK and the USA. In the United Kingdom, children usually start primary school at the age of five. They learn English, Mathematics, Science, and other basic subjects. At the age of eleven, pupils move to secondary school where they continue studying until the age of sixteen. After that, they can go to college or sixth form to prepare for university. Some students choose vocational education to learn a specific profession.
In the USA, the education system is quite similar but more flexible. Children start elementary school at about six and study there until eleven or twelve. Then they move to middle school and later to high school. American high schools offer many elective subjects such as computer science, arts, or psychology. Students can also participate in extracurricular activities like sports, drama clubs, or volunteering. After finishing high school, they can continue their education in colleges or universities. Many American students take part in exchange programs, traveling abroad to study and experience different cultures. Both systems aim to provide students with knowledge, skills, and opportunities for the future.
