My Year of Firsts
[A] My name is Mia, and I am fifteen years old. Last year was probably the most exciting year of my life — not because anything extraordinary happened, but because I tried so many things for the very first time. It all started when my parents decided to move to a new city. I was terrified. I had lived in the same small town my whole life, and the thought of leaving my friends and starting at a new school felt overwhelming.
[B] On my first day at the new school, I sat alone at lunch and felt completely invisible. But then a girl named Sofia came over and asked if she could join me. We started talking, and within minutes I felt as if we had been friends for years. She introduced me to her group of friends, who were all passionate about photography. I had never really thought about photography before, but I decided to give it a try.
[C] I borrowed my dad's old camera and joined the school photography club. At first, my photos were blurry and badly framed, and I nearly quit after the first session. But the club leader, Mr. Evans, encouraged me to keep going. He said that every great photographer started exactly where I was — at the beginning. His words stayed with me, and I practised every single weekend.
[D] That summer, my class went on a school trip to the mountains. It was my first time travelling without my parents, and I was both nervous and thrilled. We hiked through forests, camped under the stars, and explored tiny villages that felt like they were from another century. I took hundreds of photographs — of sunrises, of wild flowers, of my classmates laughing around the campfire.
[E] When we returned, Mr. Evans organised a small exhibition of students' work in the school library. Three of my mountain photographs were chosen to be displayed. Standing in front of my own pictures on the wall, surrounded by classmates and teachers who were looking at them and smiling, I felt a pride I had never experienced before. I realised that stepping outside my comfort zone had given me something unexpected: a passion, a skill, and a whole new group of friends.
