My name is Maksym, and I am fifteen years old. I live in Ukraine with my parents and my younger sister, Marichka. Our home is always full of laughter, warm discussions, and delicious Ukrainian food. For me, family and our local traditions are the most important things in life. They always make me happy.
Everything became more exciting last autumn when Sam joined our class. Sam’s family had just moved to Ukraine from Bristol, a big city in Great Britain, because of his father’s new job. At first, Sam looked lost and could not communicate well. My best friend and I decided to help him. We sat together at lunch and taught him some basic Ukrainian phrases.
To help Sam feel at home, my parents invited him to spend a weekend with us. We wanted to show him Ukrainian hospitality. My dad took us to a historical museum, and my mum cooked traditional varenyky and borsch. Sam loved it! He told us that in Britain he lived in a quiet suburb, but he found Ukrainian families very warm and special.
Sam also wanted to share his culture with us. He organized a "British Night" at his house. He prepared English tea with milk and baked delicious sweet scones. Sam showed us photos of Bristol, its famous suspension bridge, and colourful street art. We talked for hours about school, teenage life, and our dreams for the future.
Thanks to this, I realized that true friendship has no borders or language barriers. What started as helping a classmate became a strong friendship between our families. Learning about another country made us more open-minded. I am proud of my Ukrainian roots, and I am happy to have a British friend.
