Aims: -to introduce the topic of the lesson;
-to introduce vocabulary: recyclable materials;
-to give students practice in using the vocabulary, in reading for gist, in identifying specific information in the dialogue;
-to present the modal verbs must and have to and give students practice in using them in context .
Equipment: laptop, screen, presentation.
Age category of children: 11-12 years.

Warm-up

Draw students’ attention to the topic of the lesson.

Ask students to guess what the lesson will be about.

Helps students deduce the meaning of the phrase make a difference by giving them examples, e.g.
If you want to make a difference to the way you look, start going to the gym and lose some weight.

Ask students to look at the two rows of pictures:

Explain to students that they are recycling bins for different materials.

Ask students what materials they recycle.

Have students do the activity.

Play the CD and have students listen and check their answers.

Ask students to look at the picture accompanying the dialogue.

Ask students to tell you where characters are and what are they doing (Stu and Amy are talking next to a recycling bin. They are talking about recycling.)

Play the CD and have students follow in their books and check their predictions.

Ask students to read through the examples and draw their attention to the words in bold.

Explain to students that both must and have to express obligation in the present/future. However , mustn’t express prohibition in the present/future (can’t is slightly milder than mustn’t), while don’t have to express absence of obligation in the present/future.

Read out and explain the Note.
