Youth Subcultures
Teenagers often look for ways to express their identity and to feel different from adults. One way to do this is by joining a youth subculture. A subculture is a group of people who share similar values, beliefs, interests, fashion, music, and lifestyle.
Subcultures have always been part of youth culture. For example, in the 1970s, punks appeared. They had unusual hairstyles, such as brightly coloured spikes, wore leather jackets, and listened to loud, aggressive music. Their rebellious spirit was their way of saying “We don’t want to live by society’s rules.”
Another well-known group is hipsters. They prefer vintage clothes, enjoy listening to indie music, reading alternative literature, and living eco-friendly lifestyles. Many hipsters like coffee shops, cycling instead of driving, and supporting small local businesses.
Gamers are another subculture. They spend much of their free time playing computer games and meeting friends in online communities. For them, the virtual world is not just entertainment but also a way of socialising and cooperating with others.
Emo comes from the word ‘emotional’ and it refers to a genre of music with often very emotional lyrics. Emo are considered emotional, sensitive, shy, and introverted. They are also associated with depression and suicide. The main colours in their clothes are black and pink. They wear belts and jewellery with spikes, and black skinny jeans with chains.
Subcultures are important for teenagers because they help them feel that they belong to a community. They also influence fashion, music, and even social movements. While some adults see subcultures as strange or rebellious, for young people they are a way of exploring the world, developing creativity, and finding their own place in society.
