БРЕЙН-РИНГУ

НА ТЕМУ:

 

Welcome to Australia

Aims:  

 to activate key vocabulary on the topic “Australia”;  to activate and broaden students’ knowledge of the topics;

to provide opportunities for developing  students’ basic skills through interactive methods of work ( group work, etc.); to help students consolidate and cooperate  in different situations;

to develop students’ socio-cultural competence, imagination, creative abilities and culture of communication;

to foster the desire to participate in competitive intellectual activities.

 

Equipment:  “An introduction to Australia” (HO1),“Australia’s Map”, (HO2), “What do you know about Australia?” (HO3), “Australian Cities (HO4), " Dictionary of Aussie Slang"(HO5), Australian Icons” (HO6),  counters,  indicator panel

 

Procedure

I.  Greeting &  Aim 

1.  T.: Good morning! I’m glad to see you at our brain-ring today. How are you? Fine. I hope you will be active and supportive today. We are going to have a competition between two teams to get to know what team knows about Australia more and moreover we’ll find out who is the best learner of this country. Let’s greet our teams and start our contest.

2. T.: Teams, greet each other. Tell us your names and mottoes. (The teams tell their names and mottoes.)

 T.: Now let’s greet our Judges. They are…

 

II. Instruction    

T.: Our today’s contest has 6 rounds. The main goal for teams in every round to get as many counters as possible. The team having more counters wins. Besides, every participant has to collect his or her counters which he or she will get for every correct answer and then in the end of the game we’ll find out who is the best learner of Australia. So, we’ll have a team- winner and a player-winner. OK, what are the rounds?

They are

  1. “An introduction to Australia ”,
  2. “Australia’s Map”,
  3. “What do you know about Australia?”,
  4. “Australian Cities”,
  5. “ Dictionary of Aussie Slang”,
  6. “Australian Icons”.

The rules for each round I’ll explain later. So, I’ll wish you to do your best today.

 

III. Game.

T.: We start from “An introduction to Australia”.  On the board you can see fact – files about Australia. You must complete it. Who will be the first?

The first team will be the team which answer this question first.  “What is the Australia’s national floral emblem?” (The golden wattle). OK, great, you will start. The correct answer costs one counter.

           T : This time you were better and now next round. In this round you have to label the states and territories. Label the capital city and other major cities.

 

 

HO 2

“Australia’s Map”

T.: You were really active and clever.  You were better and now next second round .The other team will start. In this round you have to answer the questions. The correct answer costs one counter. The teams start to answer the questions. The time for answer is 30 seconds. If your rival doesn’t know the answer the team whose question is must answer it or it costs them one counter.

  11. What are the biggest cities in Australia? (Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane)
  12. What is the main occupation in Australia? (Agriculture)
  13. What agricultural product is Australia famous for?  (Sheep)
  14.       What are the longest rivers? (The Murray and the Darling)
  15.       What is the official language in Australia? (English)
  16.       When were the Olympic Games held in Australia? (2000)
  17.       Where did they take place? (Sydney)
  18.       What animals live in Australia? ( the kangaroo, the dingo, the emu, the platypus, the koala, the echidna, the ostrich)
  19.       When did Australia become an independent state? (On January 1, 1901)
  20.       Who is formally the head of Australia? (The Queen of England – Elizabeth II)

IV. Summing up, evaluating and giving home assessment.      

T.: Now it’s time to know the winners of today’s brain- ring. Let’s give our judges tell us the results of the contest. (The jury names the winners ( the team and the student) and greets them.) So, as we can see the team”…” has won. They have been the best today.  Our special congratulations to …, who has shown the best knowledge of  English-speaking world.  Let’s congratulate them and wish the rest of the participants’ good luck in our next game. Your home assessment will be to find new interesting facts about Australia and prepare a short report about these facts. And now there’s our ceremony of winners and participants of our holiday.
