Procedure
T: Good morning! Nice to see you again! How are you today?
2. Warming-up
T: Look at the blackboard. There are 3 expressions. Choose the one you like
and comment on it.
Love is always bestowed as a gift – freely, willingly and without expectations… We don’t love to be loved, we love to love. |
At the touch of love everyone becomes a poet. |
Spread love everywhere you go: first of all in your own home. Give love to your children, to a wife or husband, to a next-door neighbour. |
3. Telling the topic and the aim of the lesson.
T: As you’ve understood we’ll talk about St. Valentine’s Day. Today we are
going to have an unusual trip: we’ll visit ancient Rome (it’s our first stop as
you can see on our map); we’ll become writers and write some love story. At
the end of our trip each of you will find out what love is for him/her.
T: So let’s start our trip. Our first stop is Ancient Rome, where St.
Valentine lived.
Valentine's Day, or St Valentine's Day, is celebrated every year on 14
February. It's the day when people show their affection for another person
(or people!) by sending anonymous cards, flowers or chocolates with
messages of love. And traditionally on Valentine's Day in a leap year –
every four years - women can propose marriage to their lovers! The day gets
its name from a famous saint, but there are several stories of who he was.
The most popular belief about St Valentine is that he was a priest from Rome
in the third century AD. Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage because
he thought married men were bad soldiers. Valentine thought this was unfair,
so he broke the rules and arranged marriages in secret. When Claudius found
out, Valentine was sentenced to death and thrown in jail. There, he fell in love
with the jailor's blind daughter. His love and belief in God cured her
blindness, and when he was taken to be killed on 14 February he sent her a
love letter signed "From your Valentine".
2. Speaking in groups
T: Our second stop is Love-Post. You know love is not an easy thing. Do
you agree with me? And some people have problems concerning their love
affairs. Divide into 3 groups. Each group receives a letter with the question.
Give a piece of advice to the author.
Hi! My name is Rosie. I have the best friend Lucy. We have a lot in common. We go to the same sports club. But I’ve recently realized that I like her boyfriend. And I don’t know what to do. Please, help me. |
Hello! My boyfriend’s name is Peter. He is handsome, clever and easy-going. I think we’re a nice pair. But his parents are against our relationship. Please, give us a piece of advice. |
Hi! My name is Sam. I am a pupil. I am clever, hard-working and very attentive. I go in for sport. I do karate. I am very good at it. But I haven’t found a girlfriend yet. Is something wrong with me? |
3. Writing in groups
T: There are a lot of books, pictures, poems which are devoted to love.
Now you’ll be writers and write your own love-story. Divide into 2 groups.
Discuss and write a story according to the plan. Present your story to the
classmates.
4. Speaking
T: Take a card (in a form of a heart) and write down what love is, what love means to you. Then share your ideas with your classmates.
essay.
2. Evaluation and summarizing
