One road leads to London,
One road runs to Wales,
My road leads me seawards
To the white dipping sails.
One road leads to the river
As it goes singing slow,
My road leads to shipping
Where the bronzed sailors go.
My road calls me, lures me
West, east, south and north.
Most roads lead men homewards,
My road leads me forth.

The double-decker buses appeared in London in 1851. They were invented to help carry thousands of people who visited the Great Exhibition that was held that year.
The first double-deckers were rather different from those we see today. They were pulled by horses, and they didn’t have a roof. It wasn’t until 1925 that the first fully-covered bus appeared.
Today there are three and a half thousand double-deckers in London alone. There are seven different types, and they can carry as many as eighty-nine passengers. Most large cities and towns in Britain have double-decker buses. They are also used in South Africa, Australia, the Netherlands, Singapore, Hong Kong and Berlin.
