TRAFALGAR SQUARE The very centre of London is Trafalgar Square. There is Nelson's Column with the statue of Admiral Nelson on the top (185 feet high). It was erected in 1843. The four lions by Landseer were added in 1867. In the north of Trafalgar Square there is the National Gallery. It exhibits all schools of European painting from 13th to the 19th century and includes works by Rubens, Goya, Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt. In the middle of the road there is an interesting statue which is one of the finest in Great Britain. It is in bronze and represents Charles I on horseback.

PICCADILLY CIRCUS Piccadilly Circus is the meeting point of six streets. For generations Piccadily has been the heart of London's rich West End, the place of entertainment and amusement. Nowadays it is a place that on special Occasions, such as a Coronation or on New Year's Eve, as many as 50,000 people gather there. Every day a great number of cars and buses carrying a lot of people, pass the famous central fountain, with the graceful statue of Eros, the Greek god of love, standing on the top of a column.

DOWINING STREET Not far from Trafalgar Square there is a little street with very ordinary houses. This is Downing Street. It's famous for its house №10. For the last 200 years the House №10 was the official residence of the Prime Minister, it is there that Cabinet meetings are usually held.

PARLIAMENT SQUAREA little further we can see Parliament Square. Westminster Abbey is on one side, the Houses of Parliament on the other. It is an administrative part of London. What are the Houses of Parliament?The Houses of Parliament are the seat of the British government. It is a very large and beautiful building with two high towers at the corners. One of the towers is the Clock Tower. The English people built the tower with the clock in 1858. They call the clock and the Clock Tower Big Ben because the man in charge of building was very tall and the workers and his friends called him Big Ben.

WESTMINSTER ABBEY Opposite the Houses of Parliament there is Westminster Abbey. It is a very beautiful church built over 900 years ago in the 11th century. There are many tombstones, monuments and statues here. For nearly 1000 years all the kings and queens of England — 41 in all — have been crowned here and many of them are buried here too. Here is the Poet's Corner where many Britain greatest poets and writers are buried: Chaucer, Johnson, Dickens, Hardy and Kipling. You can see memorials to Burns, Byron, Walter Scott, Thackeray and Shakespeare.

WHITEHALLDowning Street leads to Whitehall. Whitehall was a palace where from the 12th to the 16th century the England kings and queens were living. Now it is just a street of government offices.

BUCKINGHAMPALACEBuckingham Palace is the Royal residence. The house is comparatively new and it has no style. However, great importance is still attached by the British to this place. Here you can see one of the most colourful and stirring of all London cereinonies, the changing of the Guards. The ceremony starts at 11.30 a.m. and takes between 30 and 40 minutes.
