Christmas in Ukraine and the UK

Christmas in Ukraine Christmas is the most important religious holiday in Ukraine. It is celebrated on the night of the sixth to the seventh of January. On this day people glorify Jesus Christ, sing carols and prepare Ukrainian Christmas dishes.

Christmas in the UKz Every country has its own customs and traditions. English people are proud of their traditions and they keep them up. It is difficult to speak about England without speaking about its holidays. All English people celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December.

Preparing for Christmas in Ukraine Ukrainians decorate their houses with New Years Trees, bells and lights. There are a lot of Christmas presents and sweets under New Year Trees. Most familyes usually have a Christmas tree in the front room, glittering with coloured lights, bright shining balls or other decorations (tinsel, toys, …). There is a shining star or an angle at the top of the Christmas tree.

Preparing for Christmas in the UK Some days before Christmas the English people send greeting cards to their relatives and friends. They usually buy Christmas cards or make them. The English people also bring a Christmas tree to their homes and decorate it with toys, sweets and other things. On Christmas Eve the English people put their presents under the Christmas tree. The children hang their stockings above their beds. At night Santa Claus comes and puts presents into their stockings.

Children write letters to Father Christmas. Father Christmas has a white beard and long green or red clothes. Children believe Father Christmas lives at the North Pole where he spends most of the year in his workshop making toys with the help of elves. People think of him as a happy man who says: "Ho, ho, ho".

On Christmas Eve children leave long socks called Christmas stockings at the end of their beds or by the chimney or hang them by the fireplace so that Father Christmas will fill them with presents. Children hope that Father Christmas will come down the chimney during the night and bring presents. A Christmas stocking is big and beautifully decorated.

Сelebration in Ukraine Christmas is a family holiday in Ukraine. People go to the churches early in the morning. Then they visit each other with some food and presents. It is called The Christmas Supper.

Сelebration in the UK British like giving presents for their dear people. Some British young people kiss under the tree. Christmas is a family holiday in the UK too. They also have their traditional Christmas dinner. The Queen’s speech is on television at three o’clock in the afternoon. There is a big Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square in London.

Food in Ukraine The most important part of the celebration of Christmas is a festive table. In Ukraine there are so many Christmas dishes, but the most important of them are kutya, stewed fruit, cake,vinihret, cabbage soup, cabbage rolls, fried fish and vegetable stew.

Dinner in the UK  The typical dinner consists of turkey with potatoes and other vegetables such as carrots and sprouts. In Britain this is followed by Christmas pudding - a sweet pudding containing a lot of dried fruit and often covered with burning brandy. Other traditional dish in Britain is a Christmas cake – a cake containing a lot of dried fruit and usually having a covering of icing

Songs in Ukraine for Christmas One of the most amazing traditions is singing Christmas carols. Children usually start caroling since early morning on the 6th of January. Children gather in groups and wear old clothes dramatizing the scenes from the Bible. These groups are called Vertep. Carols last till the 20th of January. They bring good mood and hope to every house…

Songs in the UK for Christmas Christmas carols are special songs which are sung during the Christmas season. The songs are about Jesus and the time when he was born. Carols are sung in the streets or public places. It is one of the oldest customs. People today still go caroling. They go from house to house singing carols and collecting money for charity. Singing Christmas songs for the family is a good tradition in the UK. The most famous of British carol is Carol of The Bells.

December, 26 is Boxing Day in Great Britain. Boxing Day is celebrated after Christmas Day. Boxing Day is a public holiday. People do not work on that day. People usually visit their relatives and friends.
